REARDAN - After winning five games in a row, the Screaming Eagles lost 15-1 and 9-2 to non-league opponent Medical Lake in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 5. They returned to the field on April 8 against Asotin and split the games, winning the first game 3-2 and losing the second game 5-1.

In the opener against Medical Lake, Reardan pitcher Evan Moser never got in the groove and Cardinals' batters made him pay for it by scoring 10 runs in one and two-thirds innings.

Medical Lake scored four more runs off of Moser's replacement, Colby Clouse. After three innings, Medical Lake led 14-0.

Hunter Flaa scored Reardan's sole run to make the score 15-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. The game ended after five innings under the "mercy rule" since the Screaming Eagles were behind by at least 10 runs after five turns at bat.

Andrew Firestone had three hits for Medical Lake, and Andrew Roberts and Taylor Oliver each had two. Pitchers Luke Dickey and Kaleb Cain held Reardan to three hits.

The second game started with Reardan pitcher Tate Nelson giving up two singles to Dickey and Cain, both of whom later crossed home plate via a sacrifice fly and stolen base. At the end of the inning, the Cardinals led 2-0.

Reardan scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jacob Bodeau hit a double into left field that scored Tyler Clouse, making the score 2-1.

In the sixth inning, Flaa replaced Nelson on the pitching mound for Reardan. Flaa walked five batters, allowing the Cardinals to break the game open with a seven-run inning en route to their 9-2 win.

Nelson once again took the mound for Reardan in its opening game against Asotin.

Asotin scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning.

Moser evened the score for Reardan with a double to left field that scored Tyler Clouse. At the end of four innings, the score was tied at one apiece.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Nelson tattooed the ball with a double that scored Andrew Schulz and Tyler Clouse to increase Reardan's lead to 3-1.

Flaa replaced Nelson on the mound in the top of the seventh. He walked the first batter he faced to load the bases but ended the game with a strikeout to preserve the 3-1 win.

"Tate Nelson had another great outing on the mound making it deep into the seventh inning," Reardan head coach Matt Clouse said. "He gave up five hits and struck out 12 Tigers' batters."

Nelson also went three for three from the plate, which included a two-RBI double.

He praised the team for their energy and focus.

"The team played amazing," he said. "Our energy was high and so was our confidence. When that's the case, you usually win the game."

Nelson expressed trust in his fielders and credited them for the win.

"I was throwing hard today," he said. "I kept the ball on the outer half of the plate that resulted in a lot of ground balls to the fielders. That's what really won us the game."

Matt Clouse also praised the team's defensive play.

"The defense played very well behind Nelson with several solid plays by middle infielders Andrew Schulz and Hunter Flaa," he said. "Evan Moser did a great job behind the plate and threw another runner out trying to steal second base. He also had a run-scoring double in the fourth to score a run."

In the second game of the day, Reardan managed only four hits in a 5-1 loss to Asotin.

Matt Clouse said the team struggled offensively but "the wheels fell off a bit in the top of the sixth when walks and defensive miscues led to Asotin scoring 4 runs."

Reardan's record dropped to 5-5 with the loss. Asotin improved to 6-2.

The Screaming Eagles will host Northwest Christian at noon Saturday, April 15.
