The eighth annual Friends of the pool Walk-a-Thon was held Sunday, April, 28, and raised over $3,400 as of Tuesday. Suzie Deife, FOP President, said that a total of 52 walkers collected pledges for the event. The Titans move on after defeating Selkirk Tuesday at home in Odessa. The action started at 3 p.m. with a playoff game between Selkirk and Northport of the Panorama League. The Friends of the Pool have engaged their children in efforts to keep the Odessa Aquatic Recreation Center afloat, so to speak. The kids who participated in the group's walk-a-thon know that their efforts help to keep the pool available to them over the summer. They get out and get pledges and then they walk or run around the track for most of an afternoon. Odessa’s fire brigade had to be called to the scene of a fire by whatever means possible before 1925. That year, a siren, which would alert firemen to their station was put in place atop Odessa’s Community Hall. The alarm was used not only to alert for fires or other disasters but also as a curfew to keep youngsters off the streets at night. A small Beechcraft King Air 90 turboprop airplane made a rough landing at the Odessa Municipal Airport Monday when its right side landing gear collapsed upon touchdown. The plane then spun out away from the landing strip and onto the gravel parking area beside it. Its right-hand propeller blades were bent nearly in half, and the aircraft suffered other major damage in the mishap. Sixty-four years ago the commissioners of Lincoln Hospital District #1 advertised for construction bids for the Veteran’s Memorial Hospital in Odessa. Early in 1946, the Veterans of Foreign Wars had planned to erect a memorial to Odessa’s war dead. A living memorial in the form of a hospital was proposed rather than simply a monument. It's time for Spring Fling, and folks have been calling and asking about yard sale maps (yes, they're coming out today) and with questions about many of the other activities being offered in Harrington and Odessa. Our holiday dinners get funnier each year. Take these last few years – I’ll use the Goetz family for example. The Friends of the Pool Walk-a-Thon takes place this Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. on the track at Finney Field. The children of Odessa take pledges and walk or run the track in order to raise money for the Odessa Aquatic Recreation Center. Prizes and special games are run throughout the event, and every child receives a special T-shirt. Special prizes are awarded to those who finish the most laps.
