  • He is risen! He is risen indeed!

    Jon Hayashi, Heritage Church|Updated Apr 26, 2019

The most important historical event for Christianity is Jesus rising from the dead. Over the years many skeptics have tried to explain away the resurrection. Why? Because Jesus rising from the dead is the proof that He is who He claimed to be (God in the flesh) and that He can do what He said He would do (grant us forgiveness of sins and eternal life). If Jesus did not rise from the dead then He was a liar and a false teacher, prophet, and messiah. The problem the skeptics... Full story

The proceeds from the 2019 auction will be used to purchase a 12-lead ECG/defibrillator/monitor for the Odessa ambulance. The ambulance currently uses an automated external defibrillator, which simply gives instruction to shock only if the patient has a shockable rhythm. By contrast, the new equipment is f...

  • A few of my favorites, ice cream, salad & soup,

    Laura Estes|Updated Apr 8, 2019

When I asked the “Welcome to My Kitchen” Facebook page followers for favorite spring and Easter recipes, one response I got was ice cream, no recipe, just favorite. Weather is still a bit chilly for the ice and rock salt routine of an ice cream maker, but Rocky Road Freeze, might fit the bill. Frozen in your refrigerator freezer, you can make it several days ahead. This and all the recipes this week are from Taste of Home, Best of Country Cooking, 1999 issue. This volume seems... Full story

  • Third annual Daddy-Daughter Dance

    Linda Goodman|Updated Mar 30, 2019

This is the second year I’ve happily donated the balloons and my time to build an arch for Go! Odessa Recreation’s Third Annual Daddy-Daughter Dance. Since this year’s theme was the circus, Kaylene James, founder of Go! Odessa Recreation, had the idea of a yellow and white popcorn- inspired arch coming out of large popcorn bags. I thought since popcorn shapes can be pretty random that an organic garland, rather than a traditional arch might be more fitting. [Note: Organ... Full story

  • First buttercup of 2019 found by Simon King!

    Terrie Schmidt-Crosby|Updated Mar 30, 2019

The first buttercup of 2019 was a long time coming, but that harbinger of spring has now been found and submitted to The Record by young Simon King, son of Alex and Kaci King of Odessa and a Kindergarten student at P.C. Jantz Elementary School. Simon found the bright yellow flower on his family's ranch just outside of Odessa. Our area's blast of cold weather with snow and sub-freezing temperatures through much of February and March certainly delayed the flowering of many... Full story

  • What was the best gift you received as a child?

    Linda Goodman|Updated Mar 22, 2019

What was the best gift you remember receiving as a child? I'm not talking about obvious big-ticket gifts like a car or computer. I'm talking about a gift given to you when you were in grades 1 through 7, a gift that kept you not only physically active but also able to use your imagination. For me, it was a Christmas gift from my parents right around the time I was in the sixth grade and 10 years old. It was the Adventure Buggy! The Mighty Off-Road Adventure Buggy, made by Tonk... Full story

    Updated Feb 15, 2019

To the Editor: Since Odessa city ordinances were passed to eliminate feral cats in 2016, the local quail population has increased. In talking with friends and neighbors around town, it seems most of us are charmed by watching the quail run through our yards. When a light snow has covered the sidewalks, the myriad of quail footprints running in wild circles and patterns will bring a smile of delight to the observer. For those who want to attract quail to their properties to help the survival rates of these delightful fowl,... Full story
