Mother’s Day is this coming Sunday. Mom might like a batch of Steel-cut Oatmeal Granola Bars for quick snacks or lunch time fare. Several weeks ago, they were a number of granola recipes in a Spokesman Review article. Most contained expensive ingredients not readily available locally, but several called for steel-cut oats. What I did learn from the article is that toasting the steel-cut oats before adding them to any recipe allows them to take on flavors and absorb liquid b...

We have some positive changes to applaud as the nation observes National Foster Care Month in May, says former foster child Margaret Iuculano. “In Ohio, $3 million from a mortgage settlement the state won will help foster kids pursue higher education and expand court-appointed advocates. And in Florida, a new law is going to make it much easier for foster kids to do normal things like sleepovers with their friends and school field trips,” she says. “In Nebraska, they’re close to boosting the pay for foster parents, which w...

JoAnn Hardt retired from the Marlin office of Central Washington Grain Growers after 17 years. She was essential to the running of the warehouse and maybe the town of Marlin, too. She officially worked as a bookkeeper and office manager, and unofficially as a historian, tour guide and information agent. Hardt said she ran the scales during harvest and sold the wheat and wrote checks to the farmers. During the last couple of years, CWGG was putting in a new computer system,...

First on the menu this week is a correction. I omitted part of a sentence in the cooking instructions for Roasted Brussels Sprouts. The third paragraph of instructions for the recipe should read as follows: Place in oven and bake 15 minutes, turn sprouts with spatula and bake 15 minutes more. Sprouts should be browned and very dark on the edges. I apologize for any inconvenience or confusion this may have caused. Start your day with Amish Baked Oatmeal, a recipe submitted by K...

Easter and spring school break herald times for families and friends to gather for celebratory meals. Baked ham, roast lamb, baked chicken are just a few of the main dishes served this time of year. Brussels Sprouts are still available in the markets and make a colorful garnish or side dish. Roasted Brussels Sprouts are quick and easy to prepare while the meat dish is resting before serving. Recently, the Friends of the Library were able to invite storyteller extraordinaire, David Crouch, to entertain many in...

The ingredients are the same and if one makes the small goof that Nancy reported making, the results would be the same. Nancy’s error, she reported, was m...
