  • Welcome to my Kitchen

    LAURA ESTES|Updated Feb 18, 2014

Valentine’s Day is February 14th, the day after most readers will receive their copy of The Odessa Record. I’ve included some recipes easy to prepare, that will help you make the day special for your family and friends. Blueberry Cream Muffins, suggested by Vicki Strang, make a warm and tasty start to the day. The recipe makes 24 muffins so you will have plenty to share with friends or co-workers. Bake the muffins in paper lined muffin cups for easy cleanup and ease of transpo...

Those of us living in the northern half of the country can be forgiven for being tired -- at this stage of winter -- of shoveling snow. I enjoy the brightness snow can bring to dark winter days, but I'm getting old enough that shoveling the walk in front of my house has very little appeal even though it's good for me to do some honest work before I head into my desk job. I've now hired a man to plow my driveway and I feel fortunate to have that service - even though it means I pay a fee each time we have significant snow....

  • Market Perspective

    PEARSON BURKE|Updated Feb 18, 2014

Wheat markets finally reacted positively after a USDA Crop Report. Monday's report showed a 50 million bu decrease in carryovers from the January report due to a long anticipated increase in wheat exports of 50 million bu as well as a 10 million bu increase in feed usage. That more than offset the 10 million bu increase in wheat imports coming from Canada. Wheat markets had rallied over the last week going into this report as wheat sales have remained strong and concerns continue about the condition of the winter wheat crop...

  • Letter to the Editor; Football fandom was not quite so feverish as stated after all

    Updated Feb 14, 2014

To the Editor: It has come to my attention that, in regards to students watching a replay of the Seahawks game in class, my child was less than truthful with me...the viewing of the game in class did not, in fact, occur. He thought it would be “fun to see what happens.” My sincerest apologies to all those affected by my letter to The Record. While the class parties did occur, no games were replayed during classtime. I regret not going straight to the source, and I hope we can now consider this matter close...

  • How to be thankful

    KIMBERLY NELSON|Updated Feb 14, 2014

No one is eternally grateful every day of the year. Usually these feelings of overwhelming thankfulness are only experienced after watching the news, or a close call with the neighbor’s trash can while backing out of the driveway. But, every once in a while, I like to count my blessings fully. I was born in wedlock with 10 fingers and 10 toes, one head and two mostly functional eyes. My parents never separated, and so far I’ve evaded serious injury for 18 years and counting. I live in a town where it isn’t necessary to screen...

    REV MARK SQUIRE|Updated Feb 5, 2014

Wait. What? God Doesn’t want me to be happy?!?! Okay, perhaps that was a bit of an overstatement. Allow me to explain. Three ideas dwell at the forefront of our cultural psyche. What are they? Life. Liberty. The Pursuit of Happiness. They are enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, said to be "self-evident" rights "endowed by the Creator." Not only are these ideas foundational to the American way of thinking, but they are oftentimes assumed in popular American C...

One of the things my mutt from the pound and I like to do together is go on long walks. Sometimes on weekends Buster Brown and I stroll at the bottom of the Snake River Canyon where dogs can be off-leash (as Mother Nature intended). There’s a six-mile walk in the canyon we like to do: me limping along in a straight line, Buster ranging over a wider area of ground sniffing for wildlife. Closer to home, there is a six-mile loop around town we enjoy. I think I can speak for both...

  • Letter to the Editor; Comparing deficits of FDR and Obama in second terms

    Updated Feb 5, 2014

To the Editor: Our President has been reading the polls and they are causing him to make mistakes. Unfortunately he chose to bemoan his predicament on MLK Day which was really in questionable taste. He tried to play the Rodney Dangerfield and the race card when nationwide people of most races were marching together. History should have told him that the second term has been tougher for many presidents. He needs to recognize that positive results are what America needs to see for their support to be earned. He had two years...

  • Letter to the Editor; Parents fed up with feverish fandom during school

    Updated Feb 5, 2014
    3

To the Editor: We are writing with the hope that we can shed some light on what we feel is a disservice to the children of Odessa Elementary School. Some classes had “Seahawks Parties” last week, in preparation for the Super Bowl. We have a child in school who is not a Seahawks fan and is being forced to partake in the creation of Seahawks pictures and attend class “Hawk rallies.” This child has been segregated by the other children due to not being a Seahawks fan, and the teacher has allowed this to take place. Student...

  • 4-H license plates support a great program

    Rep. Judy Walter|Updated Feb 5, 2014

“Eleven new laws took effect in Washington state on New Year’s Day, including a measure to create special license plates for fans of the Seattle Sounders FC and the Seattle Seahawks,” reads the first line of a recent AP story out of Seattle. While I fully support the Seahawks by cheering them on to the Super Bowl, I would much rather purchase another type of special license plate! A bill I sponsored that passed in 2012 went into effect last year that allows more than 90,000 4-H members in Washington state to also have a speci...

  • Welcome to my Kitchen

    LAURA ESTES|Updated Jan 29, 2014

Valentine’s Day is the sweet tooth’s favorite day. Big heart shaped boxes of candy may be the traditional sign of affection for the day, but delectable treats from your kitchen can be just as appealing. Your family might like to start the day with Caramel Apple Sweet Rolls. Charlene Kagele served these at a recent quilters gathering. She got the recipe from an article in Costco Connection, featuring Ree Drummand’s new cookbook, The Pioneer Woman Cooks: A Year of Holid...

I still have my history to enjoy reading along with the sheriff's report. I also like the new articles about locals from Odessa. So many interesting people live here. Keep up the good work. Hope to see you this summer. Chuck Wood Gig Harbor, WA....

  • Letter to the Editor; Too few of the Obamacare enrollees young and healthy

    Updated Jan 29, 2014

To the Editor: Jan. 1 started the first of a series of incidents both good and bad that are a result of Obamacare. I know a few loyal Obama supporters who are hisitant to admit that this might not serve to be Obama’s finest accomplishment. I believe that Congress needs to step up and pass a “No Bailout for Insurance Companies Act of 2014.” It needs to say “sections 1341 and 1342 of the Affordable Care Act are hereby repealed.” We need to have them do this because of adverse selection (enrolling too few young and healthy p...

  • Letter to the Editor; GOP judgement of President Obama's record

    Updated Jan 29, 2014

To the Editor: An Odessa friend sent me a January 9 copy of a letter to your paper. The letter was signed Duane Pitts of Moses Lake. Since I have a dear relative that teaches in that district and since Odessa and Moses Lake are on the same side of the state, I might question the values imparted to those students. If Mr. Pitts is a product of that education system, low information voter comes to mind. His dismissive judgment on GOP efforts lacks a bit of balance. He blames the GOP for shutting down the government. I know...

I've written here before about the problem of unwanted fires burning in coal deposits. Above and below ground, coal fires are a problem in both developed and developing nations. If we are serious about reducing our carbon dioxide emissions, we should address the unwanted fires burning around the world. Unwanted coal fires are not a huge slice of the carbon dioxide pie, but putting them out is one way we could decrease the emission of greenhouse gases without putting a damper...

    PEARSON BURKE|Updated Jan 29, 2014

Wheat markets continue to wander in their winter doldrums. The futures are trying to find a bottom but the commodity funds continue to press the short side with speculative funds now holding close to a 500 million bu net short. On the bear side, the last USDA Crop Report showed 60 million bu decrease in wheat feed use compared to the December report. This more than made up for the 25 million bu increase in wheat exports resulting in a 33 million bu increase in U.S. ending stocks for wheat. World wheat carryovers were also...

  • Letter to the Editor; President signed executive order regarding sale of guns

    Updated Jan 22, 2014

To the Editor: One of the first things President Obama did this new year was sign by executive order a bill making it harder or impossible for anyone with a mental problem to buy or own a gun. With one stroke of the 6 trillion dollar pen, he eliminated from ever owning or buying a gun everyone that voted for him. Joe Wollman Odessa...

  • Letter to the Editor; War on Poverty helped more onto dole

    Updated Jan 22, 2014

To the Editor: 50 years ago LBJ declared a war on poverty. Even though disadvantaged people have access to better living conditions and very few are actually hungry, his program failed. He wanted people to have the opportunity to (earn a living) and not live on doles of which there are more than 80 means-tested welfare programs. During 2012 alone our government spent $916 billion on these programs at an average cost of $9,000 per recipient. The average American living below the poverty line has a home that is in good repair...

By DR. E. KIRSTEN PETERS We live in an age shaped by scientific research. Medical practice, for example, changes a bit each year because of new discoveries in the laboratory or in drug trials. We have come to expect progress in a variety of technical fields, and science often lives up to our hopes for it. But science can also falter. One of the challenges for non-scientists -- whom I call "normal people" -- must address is how to interpret new scientific studies. Which ones...

What do you do with half a bag of jumbo pasta shells, extra packages of stove top stuffing mix and cans of condensed cream soups? These are just a few of the holiday items folks were looking to use in meal plans. Stuffed Pasta Shells will take care of the extra pasta shells before they become stale. Make with ground beef or go vegetarian and add spinach. This make ahead dish is substitute friendly. • Letter to the Editor; Obama care is costing us and is not tax deductable

    Updated Jan 15, 2014

Obama care or the ASA includes taxes on about 30 different things. The first one took effect on January 1. It targets small business (under 50 employees) and individual markets. It is projected to collect $8 billion in 2014 and $101 billion over the next decade. Most employers with more than 500 workers and most union negotiated health plans are self-insured and thus are spared from the tax. So is insurance run on behalf of "Government Entities" such as original Medicare. this political selectivity means that most gold...

  • Letter to the Editor; concern about dependency on government

    Updated Jan 15, 2014
    1

To the Editor; A friend whom I have known most of his life is about to retire and he asked me the question that millions must be thinking. why should someone work all throughout their life when they can make almost as much by being dependent upon our government? I told him I felt strongly that a person's pride and self-satisfaction were important to those who parents had taught them values. Unfortunately, we have too many potential workers who do not have pride! This is why we have eleven states who have more residents...

  • Advice from a Small Town Girl

    LISE OTT|Updated Jan 15, 2014

By LISE OTT Happy New Year! I'm a bit behind the times, as we're already into double-digit January dates. Fortunately, the temperatures have also been double-digit and without minus signs. But the really, really good news is that the most depressing day of the year is behind us. Now, I've always known that January is kind of tough, but it still surprised me last week when a national newscaster informed me that January 6 is the most depressing day of the year. Well, it was...

“True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar….it comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.” – Martin Luther King Jr. Today’s TV commentaries about economic justice may seem new to many of the younger generation, but in his December 1964 speech “Accepting the New York City Medallion [the highest civilian award given by New York City], Martin Luther King, Jr., addressed the issue: “In both Norway and Sweden, whose economies are literally dwarfed by the size of our affluence and...

  • Letter to the Editor; Thanking the GOP for all they've done

    Updated Jan 8, 2014

To the Editor: I would like to thank the GOP for all they have done. I would like to thank the Republicans for shutting down the government for 17 days. Their poll numbers collapsed. Veterans, tourists and the elderly were upset, to say the least. The Republicans lost the women voters in Virginia, and business people began to question their support of the GOP because of the $24 billion loss to the economy during these 17 days. I really would like to thank them. I would like to thank House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) for...
