Serving Lincoln County for more than a century!

The 42nd Deutschesfest starts today

The carnival will be at Fest after all – too late to get into the flyer printed by the employees of the local branch of Bank of America but a welcome addition nevertheless. Fortunately for The Record, the carnival information was inadvertantly left in the copy of the schedule that ran in last week’s supplement to the newspaper.

Last-minute preparations and a flurry of activity all over town mean that Fest is about to begin. Despite the volunteer firefighters being pulled away for more important duties in the countryside, the remaining volunteers have been busy finishing up the final touches.

New event

Also new to Fest this year and mostly too late for any advance publicity is an offer of airplane rides in a “barnstormer” two-seater airplane. Aaron Morris of Davenport also offered rides at the Lincoln County Fair this year and sounded very excited about coming to the Odessa Municipal Airport during Deutschesfest to add another exciting event to the festivities.

Morris and his wife will be in the street vendor area beginning Friday morning to offer a signup sheet for rides. Morris can take only one passenger at a time. Just don’t forget your camera. The event at the airport means that the fire department shuttle bus will also make runs there throughout the day.

Outdoor stage

The engraved bricks have been installed in front of the outdoor stage by Lions Club members putting in hours all last weekend and every night after work for the past several days. The new facility is looking good and is ready for its inauguration on Friday.

A new addition to the outdoor stage this year will be magician Dick Frost, who will also spend time strolling through the crowd to perform his magic up close.

Free music will be provided Friday and Saturday afternoons. On Sunday, the Odessa Ministerial Association will hold a joint church service on the outdoor stage beginning at 10:30 a.m., with participation by the Christ Lutheran, Heritage and Foursquare Churches. Two other Odessa churches will hold their regularly scheduled services on their own premises.

Carnival

After weeks of uncertainty and some last minute negotiations, the Paradise Amusements Carnival has arrived and begun setting up in the area around the Odessa Foods grocery store.

Their schedule will likely be the same as or nearly the same as last year. Some of the rides are also different from last year.

We have heard through reliable sources that the carnival will be offering a “Buddy Night” on Friday, when wristbands will be two for the price of one with student ID. Since Odessa students don’t yet have their new ID cards for this year, something else will have to be worked out in lieu of the ID cards.

Other activities for kids

As we reported last week, there will be no Youth Garden this year. But the Kangaroo Bounce House, Orbitron and face painting booth will be located on the former tennis courts behind Wheatland Bank.

There will also be a junior-high dance at the school multipurpose room on Saturday from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., but no high school dance this year.

Some of the kid-friendly fare offered by the Youth Garden will this year be available instead from Any Occasion Banquet Hall. Plans are for nachos, corn dogs, mini pizzas, ice cream and candy to be offered.

Any Occasion will also be the site where the Odessa Chamber’s Deutschesfest souvenirs can be obtained outside of the Biergarten. The Chamber of Commerce will be selling beer steins, chicken necklaces, T-shirts and aprons. The Oom Pas and Mas recorded CD of Deutschesfest music can also be purchased there.
