Girls set school record; baseball team district champs; golfers to state

Odessa and Harrington athletes have had a very successful spring season with the baseball team going undefeated and taking the district championship, the girls 4x200 relay team setting a new school record (for Odessa) in track and field and with two golfers headed off to the state tournament in Tacoma next week.

Track and field

The 4x200 relay team comprising Hannah Schmidt, Chelsea Fisher, Jordyn Tanke and Lanessa Simon, finished the final heat in a time of 1:48.82 to win the event and to break the school record, which has stood since 1976.

In fact, the O-H girls were number one in the 1B/2B qualifier held May 7 at Northwest Christian High School in Colbert with 117 points. Their nearest rival Selkirk finished with 93.5. The Titan boys also finished very well, coming in third behind Republic and Wellpinit.

Individual results, girls:

Jordyn Tanke placed second in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Her time in the 100 was 12.84 compared to the 12.82 of the winner Guglielmino of Northport.

Koralynne Kuch finished fifth in the 100, Carley Williams tenth and Stacia Lesser 22nd.

Chelsea Fisher ran the 400-meter dash and finished third in a time of 1:06.62. Jenna Shafer and Alexis Burdick competed in the 800-meter run and finished seventh and 12th, respectively. Burdick also ran the 1600 meters and finished seventh.

Lanessa Simon was third in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 19.48.

The 4x100 relay team, comprising Hannah Schmidt, Jordyn Tanke, Koralynne Kuch and Carley Williams, also finished first in a time of 52.97. Also finishing first was the 4x400-meter relay team of Lanessa Simon, Koralynne Kuch, Chelsea Fisher and Hannah Schmidt. Their winning time was 4:24.74.

Carley Williams took second place in the long jump with a distance of 14-05.00, and Stacia Lesser cam in 17th at 10-07.00.

In the triple jump, five O-H girls finished in the top 10. Simon was second at 31-00.00, Schmidt third at 30.07.50, Kuch fourth at 30-01.00, Williams eighth at 27-08.50 and Lesser 10th at 20-05.25.

The shot put had two Titan competitors in the top 10, Casey Schlomer at third with a throw of 30-00.50 and Shafer ninth with 23-06.00. Both girls also competed in the discus event, with Schlomer coming in fifth with a throw of 68-05, well off her seeded distance of 83-01, and with Shafer at 16th with 51-02 (seed distance 70-03). The javelin was also their event, and they finished in third (Schlomer) and fourth (Shafer) with 87-10 and 79-08, respectively.

Individual results, boys:

In the sprints, Odessa sophomore Sam Schafer burned up the track in the 100, taking first place in 11.59 over McCrea of Wellpinit. Dylan Shockley was 20th in 13.85. In the 200, the roles were reversed with McCrea taking first (23.44) and Schafer second (23.59). Garrett Braun was 13th (26.94), Nik Evans 17th (28.08), Shockley 20th (28.80) and Jacob Montgomery 24th (31.08).

Braun also ran the 400, finishing ninth in 59.91. In the 800-meter run, Jacob DeWulf was fifth (2:27.24), Tyler Paris 11th (2:33.19) and Trevor King 14th (2:41.11).

Paris also ran the 1600, finishing 12th in 5:40.04.

In the 4x100 relay, the team of Braun, Paris, DeWulf and Evans took fifth in 51.92.

In the pole vault final, Evans placed ninth at 8 feet.

The long jump had Sam Schafer finishing fourth at 18-07.00, well off his 19-10.00 seed distance. The triple jump was won by Schafer at 40-00.00, while DeWulf cam in third at 37.00.50.

In the shot put, King came in eighth at 33-08.00. He had a better result in the discus, placing second with a throw of 104-00. Tanner Estep was 17th at 69-05 and Montgomery was 23rd at 60-09.

Five Titans competed in the javelin event, led by DeWulf in third place with a throw of 131-06, Braun fifth at 127-00.05, Evans sixth at 120.03.50, Paris 21st at 84-05 and Estep 24th at 77-07.

Baseball

The Titans defeated Wilbur-Creston, 5-4, at Old University High School in Spokane last Saturday to clinch the district championship.

Justin Hunt was the starting pitcher, relieved by Jared King in the fifth inning. Stetson Sanford was at catcher. The Titans scored two runs in the second inning with a leadoff hit by Markus Smith. Jake Tanke then got on with a walk. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Nick Tebow then hit a line drive to score both Smith and Tanke.

The Wildcats scored two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take the lead after five innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Smith again lead off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on an infield hit by Hunt. Hunt then stole second. Tanke laid down a perfectly placed squeeze bunt to score Smith and advance Hunt to third, arriving safely at first on an error. He then stole second.

Tebow lined out to the second baseman. Gabe Henneman laid down another perfectly placed squeeze bunt to score Hunt and tie the game. Sanford had an infield hit, scoring Tanke and giving the Titans the lead. Cade Weber was walked, then stole second. King struck out to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh, the Wildcats had their final opportunities. King at pitcher struck out the number one and two hitters. The third batter hit a fly ball deep to right field which was caught by Gabe Henneman to end the game.

The team will play this Saturday at 10 a.m., again at Old University High. On Tuesday, May 14, Colton defeated ACH, so the Titans will be playing Colton. If the Titans win, they will play again the same day at 4 p.m. against the winner of the Wilbur-Creston vs. Liberty Christian game. If they also win that game, they move to the championship game which will be played Saturday, May 25, in Ellensburg at Rotary Field at 4 p.m.

The other teams still in contention are Pateros, Quilcene, Oakville and Lake Quinault.

Golf

Madison Charlton placed fourth in the district golf tournament at Meadow Wood Golf Course in Liberty Lake Monday, May 13. The Odessa-Harrington team was awarded the second-place trophy. Charlton and Griffey Powell both qualified to move on to the state tournament in Tacoma to be held next Tuesday and Wednesday, May 21 and 22 (Powell as an alternate).

Palmer Guhlke of Davenport had scores of 76 and 82 over the two days of the tournament for a combined 158 to take first place. Hunter Weitze of Colfax shot 89 and 80 for 169 and second place, while teammate Kasey Johnson shot 84 and 89 for 173 and third place.

Madison Charlton’s scores were 85 and 95 for a combined 180 and fourth.

Colby Starring of Lind-Ritzville-Sprague had 86 and 95 for 181 and fifth, while teammate Logan Morley had 84 and 102 for 186 and sixth.

Michael Hansen of Northwest Christian had 93 and 94 for 187 and seventh. Trevor Jantz of LRS had 87 and 100 for 187 and eighth. Cody Gronning of Colfax had 91 and 98 for 189 and ninth. Taylor Puryear of NWC had 89 and 102 for 191 to tie with Griffey Powell of O-H who shot 90 and 101 for 191. Both will be alternates.

Ricky Hedreen of O-H shot 88 and 106 for 194 and Nick Nelson shot 97 and 102 for 199.

The team scoring was Colfax 75.5 in first place, O-H second with 42.5 and LRS third with 37.
