Kraut Ranzas ready for 2014 Fest

With a hardy crew of volunteers, the kraut ranza committee of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Odessa last week assembled and baked more than 3,000 of the meat-, sauerkraut- and onion-filled pockets of yeast dough. Some eager citizens, who either smelled the good aromas coming from the community center or knew that Friday was baking day, stopped in to buy a few of the tasty rolls.

Not to worry, however. There will be plenty left to sell during Fest.

Other groups preparing food will soon be gearing up. Members of Heritage Church will be making their own cabbage rolls this year as Carmen Weishaar and Lindsy Starkel take over the project. They are awaiting the cabbage harvest toward the end of August. Christ Lutheran Church will make its apple strudel sometime after Labor Day.

Don't forget the museum's annual bake sale that takes place on Friday morning of Fest. Donations are needed for this sale. Home-canned foods are also welcome and sell well.

Fest activities

Odessa Chamber members continue to work on bringing activities for kids to the Fest. A mechanical bull that allows riders from age two on up is a possibility, but the operator wants $2,500 up front to come to Odessa. The Chamber is asking if donations might be forthcoming from businesses or individuals to help bring this event to town. Contact Marcus Horak (982-2627) or Jennifer Martin (988-0326) if you are interesting in helping out.
