Foundation's winetasting auction a social event for a cause

The May 1 winetasting, microbrew tasting and auction (silent and live) put on by the Odessa Healthcare Foundation was another well-attended event this year, with locals and out-of-town visitors making up a good-sized crowd. Foundation members had worked many weeks at gathering donations of items to stock the silent auction tables and to draw interest to the live auction that followed.

From a seven-day cruise donated by Holland America Line, Steve and Dr. Linda Powell, Dr. Craig Olson and Integra Imaging, PS, to social dinner engagements offered by local townspeople, the bidding for the auction items was fast and furious.

Clark Kagele was once again the emcee for the evening, pointing out items in need of higher bids during the silent auction and assisting Jacob Barth of Chuck Yarbro Auctioneers during the live auction.

Those pouring wine for the event were all local volunteers: Doug Starkel, Neil Fink, James Smith, Lani Schorzman, Tom Null and Bill Bell. Other volunteers who helped with food preparation, registration, set-up and many other tasks were Barb Schlimmer, Sally Kagele, Deanna Lobe, Deanna Nelson, Ellen Holman, Jean Starkel, JoAnna Thompson, Sherie Heimbigner, Marcus Horak, Barbara Greenwalt, Justin, Parr, Mark DeWulf, Sara Dirks, Mary Schorzman, Pam Williams, Patty Williams, Riley Allen, Sandy Libsack, Kamie Iverson, Terri King and Todd King.

Wines were served from nine different wineries: Chloe, Corvidae, Kestrel, Maryhill, Melini, Mercer Canyons, Ste. Chapelle, Trapiche and Waterbrook. Rocky Coulee Brewing Co. provided samples of five of its signature beers: Golden Light Summer Ale, Copper Cream Ale, Fireweed, Honey Blonde and Brown Ale.

A special dessert auction was also held again this year, with Ellen Holman providing a Jack Daniels Honey Whiskey Trifle with Bourbon Drizzle; Charlene Kagele supplying her widely appreciated Rhubarb Custard Pie; Jena Meise donating her Magically Delicious No-Bake Ice Box Pie; Dr. Linda Powell providing one of her renowned cheesecakes, a Chocolate Grasshopper Cheesecake; Kerry Scheller supplying both a Carrot Cake and Gourmet Cupcakes; and Deborah Walter bringing her Chocolate Raspberry Cake, Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse Cheesecake and Cookie Dough Truffles.

The silent auction tables contained more than 100 items up for bid donated by both individuals and businesses, most local but also several of them from out of town. Cash donations to the Foundation were also provided by another 10 businesses and individuals.

The members of the Odessa Healthcare Foundation Board of Directors and the other many volunteers worked very hard to make the event happen. Board members are Dr. Linda Powell, Sue Null, Carol Schott, Keith Schafer, Brenik Iverson, Lecia Fink, Nancy Floether, Mo Sheldon, Matthew Kagele, Danielle Scrupps and Jackie Johnston. The proceeds from the event will be used to purchase a portable X-ray machine for the emergency room at the hospital.

This year marked the 24th anniversary of this event. The money raised has always gone toward making the Odessa Memorial Healthcare Center a more vital and patient-friendly place for the citizens of the area.

All of those who worked so hard to make the event happen and all of those who donated items, cash or their time to the effort are to be commended.
