Messer on world stage at Texas science Olympiad

Chance returned from Houston, Texas last week after having been selected by the International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering, and Environment Project Olympiad (I-SWEEEP) to present his science research, "Engineering Flettner Rotors to Increase Propulsion." Top high school researchers from all over the world displayed their innovative ideas at George R. Brown Convention Center. More than 750 participants shared their scientific ideas, experience and knowledge to promote global sustainability in near future.

The ISWEEEP Committee exposed the participants and their mentors to various events and activities, including science shows where Chance got to hold a baby kangaroo, visit IMAX theatres and tour the Houston Natural Science Museum during his stay. After two days of grueling six-hour judging sessions, Chance was awarded Honorable Mention in the category of Engineering. Both Chance and his mentor Jeff Wehr were excited to earn this award competing against engineering students from the Czech Republic, China and Belarus to name a few. Chance said he was honored to represent Odessa at the international level and happy to do so well against very interesting science and engineering projects. Chance is currently preparing a PowerPoint presentation in order to share his research at the Spokane STEMposium hosted by WSU-Spokane this coming May 19.
