Tigers volleyball takes one loss, picks up one win

ODESSA – Last Thursday's non-league volleyball match against Lind-Ritzville-Sprague was cancelled because Odessa did not have enough healthy players to compete. By Saturday, however, the team was able to face Oaksdale, a perennial powerhouse that overcame the Tigers in three straight sets.

Odessa vs. Oakesdale

On Oct. 9, Odessa lost to Oaksdale in a non-conference game by a score of 3-0.

Emily Scrupps led the team in kills with five, while Ashlyn Neilsen and Hayden Schuh added four each. Schuh also led the team in blocks with four solos and two assists. Melloney Deife led in digs with 11 and assists with 14. Laela Hardung and Schuh received serve 20 times each with very few errors.

Odessa vs. Mary Walker

When Odessa last faced the Chargers of Mary Walker High School in Springdale on Sept. 23, they lost a close match by a score of 2-3. On their home court on Oct. 12, however, the Tigers were inspired. After losing the first set, the team bounced back and won the next three sets to take the match 3-1.

Individual stats were not available at press time, so we can provide only our personal observations. Both teams displayed an even mixture of head-shaking miscues and brilliant ball handling. Especially in the first two sets, the Tiger offense went for kill shots that sailed wide or long as often as they stayed in bounds. By the third set, the accuracy and power of the Tigers' kill shots improved dramatically. Both teams fought valiantly and were well matched.
