Davenport wins annual "Winterfest" against Reardan

Rock-paper-scissors decides Golden Plunger's fate

DAVENPORT — Winterfest between Davenport and Reardan was back this year, and the "Golden Plunger" prize's recipient came down to a rock-paper-scissors game during halftime of the boys basketball game Saturday, Dec. 11 before the host Gorillas were declared the winner.

The Winterfest competition between the two local high schools was to be decided through a points system based on five competitions: A food drive donation throughout the week, dress-up days at school, fan and students dressing up at the basketball games Saturday, a tug-of-war during the girls basketball game and a free-throw contest between superintendents during the boys basketball game.

Davenport brought in more items for the food drive, earning the Gorillas 30 points. Reardan, however, had greater participation during dress-up days at school and had 20 points going into Saturday.

As the host school, Davenport had more students and fans dressed up in Gorilla red than the opposing Reardan maroon, earning the Gorillas 20 more points.

However, Reardan students showed more strength than Davenport students during the tug-of-war, leaving the main event as a free throw contest between Davenport superintendent Jim Kowalkowski and Reardan superintendent Eric Sobotta. Both superintendents were introduced to a packed house, with Kowalkowski entering the arena like he was at a WWE main event while Sobotta's outfit bore a striking resemblance to Jackie Moon of "Semi-Pro" fame.

Sobotta expressed less confidence prior to the event than Kowalkowski, and his entrance featured fewer lighting tricks in-house, but proceeded to easily dust off Davenport's superintendent in the contest. This brought the Winterfest point totals to a tie.

Davenport principal Chad Prewitt announced the tie would be broken through a best-of-three rock-paper-scissors contest between a selected student from each side. Davenport sent out Ally Slahtasky, while Reardan went with Emma Flaa.

Flaa won the first round, but Slahtasky followed with two straight victories to secure Davenport's Winterfest victory.

Together, the two schools raised over 1,600 food items to donate to Second Harvest during the Winterfest festivities.
