Davenport boys pull away from Reardan

Gorillas outscore visitors by 17 in last three quarters

DAVENPORT-Reardan came out ready to play, but Davenport outlasted its visitors and pulled away for a 76-60 victory in the annual rivalry boys basketball game Saturday, Dec. 11.

Reardan came out guns blazing against the more talented Gorillas. Owee Handley hit several shots to the roar of the visiting crowd, while Davenport kept pace as Reardan led 21-20 after a quarter.

"Owee Handley gave us a big spark in the first quarter," Reardan head coach Brian Graham said. "It helped us get that feeling of clicking offensively."

Davenport and Reardan continued to execute on offense, but the Gorillas had built a 40-35 lead by halftime that extended to 56-43 at the beginning of the fourth quarter with a three-pointer by sophomore Jaeger Jacobsen.

"We just looked a little bit out of sorts and came out a little bit flat in a big game," Davenport head coach Matt Henry said. (But) when we started focusing on things that we do defensively, we executed better."

The Gorillas outscored Reardan 36-25 in the second half to pull away for a 16-point victory to cap off the Winterfest activities.

Reardan's shooting percentage was higher than Davenport's at 42.9% to 39.3%, but Reardan committed 20 turnovers to just 11 for Davenport. Additionally, Davenport shot 7-for-19 from three while Reardan was 3-for-13. Reardan was whistled for 26 fouls to just 12 for the Gorillas.

"We did a pretty decent job," Henry said. "We've got a group that can score offensively, so we just need to make sure we take pride in our defense."

Davenport junior Tennessee Rainwater led both sides with 18 points and added seven rebounds and six assists. Junior Brenick Soliday added 17 points and four steals. Senior Jake Coffman scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds, Jaeger and Jarrett Jacobsen each scored 10 points and Wyatt Telecky scored six points and had eight rebounds in a balanced Gorillas effort.

"We wanted to minimize their best player," Graham said. "If we were to get them at home, some of those guys might not have made some of those shots that they did."

Four players were in double figures for Reardan. Jakari Singleton nearly had a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Owee Handley led the scoring with 13 points. Cody Sprecher and Logan Flaa scored 12 points apiece.

Davenport continued its winning ways with a convincing 68-27 win over Odessa Tuesday, Dec. 14. Rainwater scored 24 points in the game as the Gorillas improved to 5-1 this season. Reardan, meanwhile fell to 2-4 with a 60-44 loss to Lind-Ritzville/Sprague.
