La Nina pattern expected to persist through winter

DAVENPORT—Last Thursday brought 4.3 measured inches of snow here, which was a Jan. 6 record since the National Weather Service began recording daily precipitation in 1893.

The snowfall brought over half of Davenport’s January snowfall average in one day. The city usually averages 7.5 inches of snowfall in the first calendar month, NWS lead meteorologist Charlotte Dewey said.

“You could say that Davenport got half a month worth of snow in one day,” Dewey said.

“Davenport usually gets pretty decent snowstorms in the winter, but it’s probably been a while since anyone in that area saw a snowstorm,” she added.

Dewey said forecasts through the rest of the month, February and March continue to predict a La Nina pattern, which calls for below-average temperatures and above-average precipitation.

However, the area is expected to see a halt in precipitation for about a week, with cloudy but dry conditions forecasted through next Thursday.

“There’s nothing in the next seven to 10 days of significance as far as snowfall,” Dewey said.
