Davenport boys continue winning ways

Gorillas force running clock against UCA

DAVENPORT—The Gorillas’ full-court, three-man pressure was far too much to handle for the Upper Columbia Academy Lions in the second quarter of Tuesday’s Senior Night contest. Davenport outscored UCA 31-2 in the period, taking a 54-16 lead into halftime and forcing a running clock in the second half en route to an easy 83-35 win.

“I’d like to be able to run it (going forward),” Davenport head coach Matt Henry said of his team’s full-court press. “We have too much length and speed that I think we can utilize it in that sort of way.”

The win was Davenport’s fifth straight. The Gorillas have won 16 of their last 18 games.

Tennesee Rainwater, as usual, was Davenport’s leading scorer. He scored 23 first-half points before sitting the majority of the second half once the game was easily out of hand. Cash Colbert got the start and added 18 points for Davenport.

UCA managed just four points in the fourth quarter and two points in the second quarter.

Davenport improved to 15-3 with the win and 7-1 in league play. The Gorillas remained in third place in the NE2B after Liberty held off Lind-Ritzville/Sprague in overtime by a point Tuesday.

The Gorillas have two games left in the regular season, one of which is a Friday trip to Spangle to take on Liberty, which handed Davenport its only home loss of the season in December. After that, it’s a regular season finale matchup at home against LRS before the district playoffs start next week.
