Garbage rates increasing 3%

Council approves solid waste contract amendment with Sunshine

DAVENPORT—Garbage and refuse pickup rates for Sunshine Disposal and Recycling are going up 3% effective April 1 after council approved Sunshine’s request at its March 23 meeting.

The city has contracted with Sunshine for garbage disposal services within city limits since April 2014.

The rate increase comes for the second time in 15 months after council agreed to extend the contract that was due for extension March 31. It’s the largest rate increase amongst the last three increases.

Rates increased 2% at the beginning of 2021 and 2.88% at the beginning of 2019. No increase occurred during 2020.

A residential 32-gallon tote will cost $10.77 per week for pickup, up from $10.46. The same sized tote for commercial pickup is up to $12.91 from $12.53. One yard-sized dumpster will be $66.88 per week, up from $64.93 per week.

Council also agreed to Sunshine's request to change the collection date for some holidays to the next day of pickup, which is on Tuesdays in city limits. This would only apply if a holiday like Christmas, New Year’s or Independence Day landed on a Tuesday.

Now, garbage pickup workers can perform their duties on Wednesday after a holiday instead of working a holiday.

Council also approved a resolution designating The Record-Times as the city’s official newspaper for legal publication.

Tom Schreck, who had previously voiced his concerns with the Lincoln County Commissioners, asked council to consider enacting a moratorium on the second phase of a proposed R.V. Park at the Fairgrounds until approval from the city planning commission.

The first phase of development isn’t in city limits, so the city can’t enforce a moratorium until the second phase.

Council next meets Wednesday, April 13 at 7 p.m. in City Hall.
