Three Gorilla golfers qualify for state

Players advance on combined sub-district, district scores

DEER PARK – After a successful pair of rounds at sub-districts and districts, three golfers from Davenport are headed to the state tournament next week.

Maddox Schumacher and Grayson Danekas qualified on the boys side, while Abby Breithaupt qualified on the girls side, head coach Trenton Briney said.

State qualification was determined through combined scores of sub-districts in Deer Park May 2 and districts at Meadow Wood May 9. The top 20 golfers for each gender advanced to state, which is also in Deer Park, beginning May 23 and running through May 25.

Schumacher had the team’s best finish, shooting an 82 at sub-districts and an 89 at districts to finish in fifth place and advance to state. He was also named all-league.

Danekas shot a 95 at sub-districts and an 89 at districts to finish 13th overall and qualify.

Breithaupt was the lone girls qualifier for Davenport, with scores of 122 at sub-districts and 130 at districts to finish in 10th place.

Keaton Hupp and Jada Rodrigues both competed for Davenport, but didn’t advance past districts.
