Resignations strike Odessa School District

ODESSA- Five new resignations were announced at the Odessa School Board meeting on June 22.

Resignations were from high school secretary Chris Luiten, junior high assistant basketball coach Zoe Clark, High school assistant basketball coach Matt Gorman, bus driver Steve Matthews and junior class advisor Larry Moffet.

During public comment Kerry and Paul Scheller expressed their concerns over school security. Kerry Scheller expressed the need for more security due to recent shootings.

Superintendent Dan Read shared the average count for the school year as 213.95 compared to 209 from last year.

Read continued by discussing transition plans with incoming superintendent John Bruce which includes end of the year reporting, grant applications and general duties.

Bruce’s contract takes effect Friday, July 1.

Principal Jamie Nelson said graduation week was successful.

Activities for graduation week included the senior walk and recognition ceremony, a barbeque hosted by Read and graduation on June 4.

Nelson said FFA members attended their state conference and officers were elected at the annual banquet at the golf course.

FBLA elected officers are preparing for their trip to nationals in Chicago.

The officers elected were president Jacob Scrupps, vice president Grace Nelson, secretary Kaytlyn Shafer, treasurer Yvette Davey and assistant treasurer Melloney Deife.

Chris Crossley expressed appreciation to the staff members leaving the district for their years of service to the Odessa School District.

Ed Deife acknowledged the senior class for a record-breaking year on the number of scholarships awarded.

Head of maintenance Justin Parr will be working on the third stage of the heating system project replacing exhaust fans, booster pumps and the boiler pump.

Parr will be also working on trimming trees, sprinkler repairs, improvements to the shot-put area and replacing the roof on the football field bathroom.
