Hoopfest draws Lincoln County crowd

SPOKANE-The weather ceased its "Juneuary"-like theme just in time for the return of Hoopfest this last weekend. Thousands of teams took the hundreds of courts in front of tens of thousands of spectators in the annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament that dominates downtown Spokane over a June weekend.

This year's tournament was the first since 2019 after two years of pandemic-related closures.

Plenty of Lincoln County competitors took to the blacktops last weekend. Here's several results of kids from Davenport, Reardan, Odessa and Harrington who we've heard competed, but we certainly missed a few. If that's the case, let us know who we missed and we'll update the results in a future issue.

Larry and Jack Soliday, along with Jon Heimbigner and Terry Nealey, took home a Senior Elite Men's Division title for their squad Swinging Doors PMP with wins over Maxwell House, Older N Dirt and two in a row against Wamonida.

The young "Gorillas" in Everett Prewitt, Titus Lathrop, Bennett Wagner and William Corey were victorious in their own bracket with wins over Creek Crusaders, Ballerinas and two dubs over Jiggy's Men.

Tie-Dyed Country Girls, a fourth-grade girls team consisting of Bella Ibarra, Gianna Breedlove, Taryen Carroll and Sadie Steward took third place.

Scratch N Sniff, a Reardan-centric team of Ella Curry, Hinnah Frolov, Owee Handley and Deshawn Tsoumpas, competed in the Adult Co-Ed division with two wins and two losses.

BSN Sports, an Elite Adult Male Over 6' team of Jeremy Groth, Griffon Jones, Ryan Ericksen and Rocky Soliday, had three wins and three losses.

Goroncos, a Davenport and Ritzville team-up of Darby Soliday, Ellie Telford, Lainy Jacobsen and Eliza Galbreath, had two wins and two losses in the Adult Female division.

Some Like it Hot, a High School freshman girls team from Davenport featuring Sawyer Raugust, Glenna Soliday, McCall Knopp and Samantha Stiles, had a pair of wins and a pair of losses.

Davenport Legends, a youth female team of Avery Prewitt, Dahlia Strozyk, Layla Hammond and Charlie Shreck, had a win and two losses.

The Gorilla Gunners youth male team of Emmett Prewitt, Cooper Henry, Fulton Lathrop and Ryker Wagner had four wins and two losses last weekend.

Finally, yours truly competed with some friends from the West Side for the first time in the Adult Recreation bracket.

My words couldn't accurately describe the pure disaster that ensued from attempting to compete with people you haven't even played a pickup game with in over five years, but the resulting sunburn I received from the beating sun didn't compare to the pain of seeing my own shots clank off the rim over and over and seeing my teammates miraculously forget how to keep the ball in bounds.

Our inability to feed the post to our only guy over six feet tall, my buddy Sam, was detrimental in our quest for eternal Recreation division glory.

Plays that involved back-screens and hard cuts sure to get open layups at the rim were either mysteriously neglected or featured just one or two players remembering how they worked in the heat of battle.

At least our defense was pretty good, and despite the All-day L's, we're confident we'll return next year with...slightly better results.

Now, local attention can return to the allure of the Fourth of July, summer ball and weekend trips on the boat at Lake Roosevelt, with a long look ahead to next year's edition of the Best Basketball Weekend on Earth.
