Next year's school budget approved

DAVENPORT—It’s budget season in local school districts, and the school board here approved the budget for the 2022-23 school year at the regular meeting Wednesday, July 27.

The board accepted the budget presented by first-year business manager Dana Telecky, who completed her first budget for the district.

The school district is budgeting for 540 students this year, a 10-year increase from the two previous years. The district anticipates more students than that as enrollment rose to 562.94 last year, but the plus-10 increase allows for more conservative figures, Telecky said.

The district will have an estimated beginning fund balance of $1,052,000 with projected revenues of $10,554,891 and projected expenditures of $10,648,015. Add in a $30,000 transfer to debt services and that leaves the district with an estimated fund balance of $928,876, lower than it started with.

However, Telecky said revenues are expected to be higher than projected due to a higher enrollment expectancy.

Local revenue is projected to decrease $14,128 or 1.45% from $970,728 to $956,000 with the current enrollment budget. State revenue would increase 2.10% from $7,236,758 to $7,388,733, while federal revenue would swell 40.14% from $1,576,589 to $2,209,558.

General fund expenditures would largely fall in salaries and benefits, which take up over 75% of the budget. Salaries are expected to increase 6.62% and are budgeted at $5,857,535, while benefits rise 5.96% at $2,360,282. Other expenditures are projected to rise 18.18% to $10,648,015.

The largest material, supply and operating cost increases in the budget come in food services, which sees a rise from $145,900 to $290,250. ESSER III grant fund spending is projected to increase from $130,000 to $350,744, while special education costs rise from $80,100 to $148,000.

Total material, supply and operating cost expenditures are projected to rise from $2,098,575 to $2,430,198, but much of the increase is covered in ESSER III and DLT grant funding.
