Serving Lincoln County for more than a century!
DAVENPORT — Most of the United States was under some winter storm warning over Christmas weekend. As a result, temperatures dropped several degrees below zero around Lincoln County. While it was cold (-12 for Davenport, Odessa and Harrington), previous winters were bitterly cold.
According to the National Weather Service, the lowest recorded temperature for January for Davenport was in 1996 (-28), 1950 (-27) and 1979 (-24).
Harrington has had mild temperatures in the past, but not by much. For example, the lowest recorded temperature was in 1982 (-25), 1996 (-20) and 2004 (-22).
The Odessa area usually sees less snow than Davenport and Harrington but has lower recorded temperatures in 1929 (-33), 1982 (-29) and 1957 (-24).
After Christmas week ended with snowfall, New Years’ Week had been in the low 40s as of press time.
The highest recorded temperature for January in Odessa was in 2003 (60), 2003 for Davenport (55) and 2003 for Harrington (57).
Anna Hopper, a newcomer to Harrington, recalled her grandma talking about a cold winter in the 1950’s.
“I remember my grandma talking about a super cold winter growing up,” Hopper said. “The last few years, it seems to be a little warmer in January.”
The upcoming projected forecast is for snow over Thursday, Dec. 29 and rain Friday, Dec. 30.
Over the next week and a half, temperatures will hover in the 30s for the highs and low 20s for evening time.
