Bruce resigns as superintendent

ODESSA - Superintendent John Bruce announced his resignation at the school board meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 25.

Bruce came to the school district in late July last year from Alaska. He will be returning to Alaska to fill a similar position.

No reason was given for his resignation, but the board thanked Bruce for his service and wished him well.

He declined to comment on his resignation to The Record-Times.

Board Chair Ed Deife said the district and board would be utilizing help from the ESD in looking for an interim superintendent. The district has two prospects that will be coming for a visit next week.

The board tabled selecting an interim superintendent until a special meeting Monday, Jan. 30.

Bruce said there were 13 students signed up for the highly capable testing.

Principal Jamie Nelson said that testing was initially allotted for January, but due to a using new program has been pushed back until February.

The board approved five resignations: Ellen Holman, Holli Eden, Jeff Nelson, Matt Gorman and Cade Weber.

Athletic Director Larry Weber discussed fall football schedules, the lack of a junior high baseball coach and the upcoming track season.

He also mentioned the fundraiser for a student with cancer that will be held at the Odessa vs. Wilbur-Creston game.

Facilities Manager Justin Parr said the bus that was supposed to be in October is here now and will take a little work to run.
