Gorilla girls rout Reardan

Davenport has won six of last eight

REARDAN - On Jan. 3, the Liberty Lancers traveled to Davenport and destroyed the Gorillas 60-38. Since that relatively surprising beatdown, Davenport has won six of its last eight games, with the only two losses being to two of the best teams in the state, Colfax and Okanogan.

And no win in that stretch was more dominant than what Davenport did to rival Reardan Tuesday, Jan. 24. The Gorillas traveled for the Winterfest rivalry and won 67-14.

The outcome was never in doubt, as Davenport scored the game's first 15 points behind a tough zone press and solid outside shooting.

"We changed a little bit on defense and we made a few three-pointers early," Davenport head coach Stacia Soliday said. "Then we get some momentum. When we don't shoot well early, we come to a grinding halt."

By halftime, the Gorillas were up 34-8. Davenport kept the pressure on the Screaming Eagles in the second half and had a 37-point lead after three quarters that ballooned to its final margin of 53 points by the final buzzer.

"They just played harder. They're better. They're more disciplined," Reardan head coach Bob Swannack said. "I felt like our girls quit on me tonight."

Davenport had a balanced attack led by eighth-grader Emalie Jacoby, who scored 21 points and forced six steals. Senior Kiersten Kemmerer scored 13 points, while freshman Glenna Soliday scored 12.

Davenport outrebounded Reardan 32-15, paced by eight boards from junior Jensyn Jacobsen and seven rebounds by freshman Clare Lathrop off the bench.

"We had a talk before our game that we need to play as a team and that some games we weren't prioritizing that," Jacobsen said. "We switched to a 1-3-1 (zone), which was new for us, and I think that really showed that we've been working on it and it worked well."

Senior Liberty Anderson was Reardan's high scorer with five points.

The loss improved Davenport to 9-3 in league play and 12-6 overall with three games remaining in the regular season. Next up is an important seeding game at 8-3 Northwest Christian Friday, Jan. 27 before Senior Night Saturday, Jan. 28 vs. Kettle Falls.

Reardan travels to Kettle Falls Friday night before hosting St. George's in its own Senior Night on Saturday.
