Davenport finishes sixth at state

Gorillas win academic state title

TACOMA - One of the school's best wrestling seasons in recent history culminated in a sixth-place finish at the state Mat Classic XXXIV for Davenport. Four of the five Gorillas that competed medaled, and Davenport pulled in an academic state title to boot.

No Gorillas were able to pull in a first-place title. Senior Sam Schneider came the closest in the 195-pound division with a second-place finish.

Schneider pinned Rainier junior Mason Hornby in 44 seconds in the quarterfinals and pinned Ocosta senior Gage Grigsby in 3:57 but fell to Okanogan senior Johnny Swartsel by decision 9-5 in the championship match.

Schneider had previously won a match and lost a match in prior contests against Swartsel.

"We thought we had a chance," Davenport head coach Matt Schneider said. "We put up a fight and came up short. We took our shot and didn't get it."

Fellow senior Matthew Wines finished third in the 160-pound class.

Wines pinned Rainier sophomore Zander Peck in 3:56 before falling to Granger junior Cody Northwind by major decision 10-0. Wines then defeated Kittitas sophomore Simon Jones by major decision 10-2, beat Adna junior Jacob Price by forfeit and pinned Chewelah sophomore Dekota Acosta in 48 seconds.

"Wines took third, which was better than he was ranked on paper," Matt Schneider said.

Junior Brody Schillinger also had a third-place finish, his being in the 152-pound class.

Schillinger pinned Toledo sophomore Bomani Birdwell in 4:26 before falling to Tonasket senior Chris Rodriguez by technical pin in 5:50. He then pinned Forks freshman Adrian Sanchez in 4:09, White Swan senior Fabian Garduno in 4:43 and Lake Roosevelt senior Landon Krohn in 55 seconds before defeating Kittitas senior Josiah Skindzier by decision 3-2.

"Brody wrestled some pretty good matches," Schneider said.

Freshman Malachi Hoff was the fourth Gorilla to medal, finishing sixth in the 126-pound class.

Hoff pinned Granger junior Adrian Alvarez in 5:31 but fell to Forks senior Conner Demorest by major decision 21-10. He beat Rainier sophomore Conner Mounts by technical pin in 2:37 and Reardan freshman Carson Kline in 2:54 but fell to Columbia (Burbank) senior Devin Boone by decision 5-4 and Liberty Bell eighth-grader Yolo Paz by pin in 1:58.

Freshman 182-pounder Brock Gustaveson was the lone participant to come up short of a medal. Gustaveson pinned Lake Roosevelt senior Junior Garcia in 2:40 but fell to Forks junior Nate Dahlgren by decision 8-6. He then pinned Toledo junior Maddux Ramirez in 2:59 but was pinned by Pomeroy junior Curtis Winona in 3:38.

The academic state title came as a result of the team's combined 2.37 grade point average.

"We're pretty excited about the weekend overall," Schneider said.
