District Court receives grant

DAVENPORT — A technical assistance grant program aimed at improving defendant appearance rates selected Lincoln County District Court as one of six courts nationwide to receive such a grant.

The program, which is funded by the National Center for State Courts and the Pew Charitable Trusts, hopes to find ways to make court appearances more accessible for defendants, District Court administrator Renee Honey said. The grants netted each recipient an iPad and free consulting services to make recommendations for improvements.

“We’re collecting feedback from court participants,” Honey said. “We’ll examine the data to try to make ways to make appearances easier for defendants.”

The grant recipients were announced in Dec. 2022 and have been meeting with the National Center for State Courts via Zoom. Two representatives from the Center were in Lincoln County in late February to meet with District Court staff and Judge Dan B. Johnson.

The next step is an in-person conference in Richmond, Virginia in April. Honey said she hopes to take the improvements she learns about and share those findings with other courts around the state.

The other courts receiving the grants were in Kansas City, Buckeye, Arizona, Richmond, Georgia, LaCross County, Wisconsin and Jefferson County, Alabama.
