HARRINGTON — A local woman lost her home and cat during a fire early Thursday, March 6.

Patsy Tanferani and her friend Gail Cleaver were home when the fire started.

Cleaver said she heard Tanferani screaming while she was in the bathroom.

“I came out of the bathroom and saw flames higher than Patsy,” Cleaver said. “She asked if I could put it out. I told her we needed to go.”

Cleaver said she and Tanferani made their way out the door.

“We slammed the door shut,” Cleaver said. “Then the windows blew out.”

Cleaver said the community has been helpful in the wake of the fire.

“We got her some food from God’s Closet,” Cleaver said. “She is all alone and having a hard time.”

Cleaver said losing her home has been hard on Tanferani.

“She asked if I could return and get her cat,” Cleaver said. “By that time, it was far too late.”

Due to health issues, Tanferani was unavailable for comment.

Cleaver said the one thing Tanferani needs is a cell phone.

“Patty is removed from everything,” Cleaver said. “She only knows how to use a flip phone. She’s feeling removed from everyone.”

Neighbors Levi and Ashley Schenk heard the women screaming from the front porch and rushed out to help.

“It was about 5 (a.m.) in the morning,” Schenk said. “We heard a ruckus.”

Schenk said they went outside and saw the flames engulfing the side of the house.

“We heard them yelling and ran outside to see how we could help,” Schenk said.

Schenk said they called 911 immediately after seeing the flames.

Patra Canfield has been helping organize funds for Tanferani and has been a long-time friend.

“It’s an unfortunate situation,” Canfield said. “She has a big heart.”

Canfield said their love of helping animals brought them together.

“She watches the neighborhood cats,” Canfield said. “She deserves better.”

Canfield said donations can be made to Tanferani’s name at US Bank in Davenport.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
