Marketplace rebrands to Home & Makers

Storefront re-opened in February

HARRINGTON - The downtown Marketplace has a slightly different look. The business has rebranded to a new name: Home & Makers.

"It was clear that our home goods were our best-selling item," owner Kathi Matthews said. "We still wanted to showcase local artists."

The business closed in January and re-opened in February with a fresh coat of paint and a new storefront.

"The store was painted, making it lighter and brighter," Matthews said.

Matthews said the original outdoor theme was retired in favor of a more cohesive feel and rather than a vendor being assigned a specific booth, they are mixed and matched for a cozy atmosphere.

"While I originally moved back to help my aging parents...it was a dream to do something that would contribute to Harrington's resurgence," Matthews said.

Matthews grew up and graduated high school in Harrington. She returned to the area with her husband, Norman Strickland, in 2017.

Building owner Jay Gossett refurbished the historical building in 2020. The interior was fitted with custom-booth dividers and decorated with the outdoor market theme.

"The vision was to offer a space for almost any kind of small businesses," Matthews said.

Matthews said that she and a friend from Spokane rented a booth together in Sept. 2020, where they sold "found" home decor, vintage items and houseplants.

"It wasn't long before a few other local artists and crafters joined The Marketplace," Matthews said. "We had so much fun and were encouraged by the community."
