Silhan not returning as mayor

Councilman Armand lone filer for seat

HARRINGTON - The mayor of the city will change after 2023. Jesse Silhan announced on his 75th birthday Friday, May 19 he wouldn't be seeking re-election to the seat after his two-year term expires.

"On my birthday I let people know...over a piece of pizza and a glass of water at the Harrington Haus," he said.

The 75-year-old Silhan was elected and took the seat Dec. 31, 2021.

"I've just decided I'm going to spend a little more time being a 75-year-old man," Silhan said. "I'll still be living in Harrington and will serve the city wherever I can."

Silhan will likely be replaced by councilman Joe Armand, who was the lone candidate to file for the seat during filing week last week.

"It's been a pleasure serving the city and I plan to continue to serve the city," Silhan said.

He said he plans to spend retirement traveling and working on his city home.

Silhan wasn't the only local incumbent to decide against filing for re-election for a local office where a would-be challenger did file.

School board member Mark Kramer didn't file for re-election, while current at-large member Jon Evans and challenger Tony Hamilton did file for seat No. 2. Thomas Schenk filed for the No. 5 at-large position.

A similar situation presented itself on the Davenport school board, where incumbents Jaymie Bennett (seat No. 1) and Deanna Fitzpatrick (seat No. 2) didn't file. Lorin Lathrop and Erica Winzer filed for their current positions.
