Crews knock down small blaze

Green Canyon Fire quickly controlled

DAVENPORT - A brisk response by local and state crews prevented the Green Canyon Fire near State Highway 25 and Porcupine Bay Road from doing much damage Tuesday, July 25.

The fire, which burned 11.5 acres according to Dept. of Natural Resources spokesman Guy Gifford, was 100% trailed by Wednesday morning.

"The fire burned through scattered timber, grass and understory," Gifford said. "We had three hand crews, five trucks for about a total of 60 firefighters."

"We also had two fire bosses, which are the single-engine planes and two scoopers, which are the double engines, plus one helicopter and one air attack."

Crews from the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and Lincoln County Fire District No. 5, including both Davenport and Egypt firefighters, were first on scene when the fire was reported by Porcupine Bay area residents around 6:25 p.m. Tuesday.

The Dept. of Natural Resources and crews from Reardan swooped in to assist.

Notices were given to residents on Porcupine Bay, Hart, Teel Hill and Orchard Roads, but no evacuations were ever ordered. No firefighters were injured and no structures burned, Gifford said.

Undersheriff Jesse Allen said humid weather conditions and an easterly, mild wind aided the brisk response that prevented the fire from taking a turn for the worse.

"The conditions were in our favor," Allen said. "We had the air resources and a really good response airtime. And with the lake being right there, we could scoop and dump a lot of water right on the fire quickly."

Dept. of Natural Resources crews remained on scene through Wednesday to finish mopping up the fire, Gifford said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation at press time.
