Whiteside, Harper present music

Tunes told at county museum

DAVENPORT - This last weekend Steve Whiteside gave his third music-themed presentation at the Lincoln County Museum in Davenport. He is knowledgeable, passionate and anxious to share music with others.

This time the focus was on two main themes: Barlee Brown and brass instruments. In addition, he talked about the history of a few unique stringed instruments.

Barlee (Boyk) Brown and her sister, Lois, were raised in the Rocklyn area and performed around the Northwest and on live radio in Spokane from the 1930s-1950s. Her performing costume and ukulele were prominently displayed last weekend and a recording of some of their music was played.

She lived in Davenport, where she married Ralph Brown and together they raised 4 children there.

High school band director Rob Harper gave a short presentation on the cornet on display as well his son's trumpet. He shared fascinating information about brass instruments.

Whiteside shared CD music of several songs: Barlee and her sister Lois, songs from the 30s, 40s, and Civil War eras; one song featured a "Jaw Harp" which is also displayed in one of the music display cases.

Next May, Whiteside will be giving another presentation so mark your calendars. And, speaking of calendars, please save 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16 for a presentation of "Harry Tracy: Bad Guy," his life and his connection to Lincoln County.
