Davenport eviscerates Pateros

Clock running before halftime as Gorillas win

DAVENPORT - The Pateros Billygoats came into town last weekend searching for their first win of the season after five straight losses to open the 2023 season. And playing their third varsity game of the year, Davenport made plenty sure that didn't happen with a resounding 60-7 victory Friday, Oct. 13.

The game was practically over before it started. On Davenport's first play from scrimmage, Brock Gustaveson took the ball up the middle on a 60-yard run before finishing off the drive with a one-yard jaunt into the endzone.

Brody Schillinger then ended Pateros's next drive with an interception of a deep pass at the Davenport 32-yard line. That began to set a trend, as Davenport forced turnovers on three straight Billygoat possessions.

Davenport used a bit of trickeration on its next scoring drive. Schillinger took a handoff and pitched to Gustaveson just before getting tackled, leading to a 16-yard touchdown drive.

Joel Odenrider joined the turnover-to-touchdown party on the next series, intercepting a pass at the Davenport 43-yard line before hitting Schillinger on a deep pass down the right sideline for a 43-yard score.

Then, Schillinger forced a fumble and Holden Moriuchi pounced on the ball on the Pateros 46-yard line.

Davenport took a 22-0 lead into the second quarter, which started similarly to the first. Odenrider found Schillinger in the corner of the endzone for a 22-yard touchdown, then Gustaveson ran in a 28-yard rushing score to make it 38-0 with 9:34 left in the second quarter.

Gustaveson had his fourth touchdown moments later, racking up 98 yards in one drive with rushes of 26 yards and a 72-yard scoring run, and the lead was 46-0 with 7:27 left in the second quarter.

"We kind of just really felt just based upon their personnel and how we could line up that we had an advantage in the box and also we just knew that schematically we could kind of suck them in tight and get to the edge," Davenport head coach Tim Rasmussen said. "That was kind of our game plan."

By rule, the game went to a running clock.

"Our line kind of crushed them, creating gaps especially with our middle run," Gustaveson said. "I cut back a lot reading, and I thought I did an outstanding job running in general."

Schillinger scored his third touchdown with a 12-yard rush just before halftime, then Nathan Wines managed a 4-yard score with 8:28 left in the fourth quarter to wrap up the Davenport scoring.

"We didn't have the best week of practice, so we just challenged our kids to overcome that part of the adversity and what we could control in preparation and just come out and start fast," Rasmussen said. "We felt like we've been getting better with that every week and that's kind of just the focus of getting on it and getting up."

Davenport improved to 2-1 with the win and wraps up its unusual 2023 season with a Senior Night tilt against Oroville at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20.
