ODESSA - Veterans Day was celebrated by the School District with a school-wide assembly on Monday, Nov. 6.
Although the ranks of the veterans attending were thin, school children, staff members and administrators were in attendance to present quite a memorable experience for those present.
The Odessa Junior/Senior High School band led off with a rousing rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner.
After having gone an entire year with no band teacher or band class, the students were back in very fine form for the occasion and their playing of the National Anthem was rewarded with a loud round of applause.
The band later played a medley of the theme songs of the five groups making up the U.S. Armed Forces: Anchors Aweigh for the US Navy, The Caissons Go Rolling Along for the US Army, The Wild Blue Yonder for the U.S. Air Force, The Marines' Hymn for the US Marine Corps and Semper Paratus for the U.S. Coast Guard.
They also closed the program with a performance of America the Beautiful.
Principal Cori Kane was the emcee for the program, with participation also by Superintendent Steve Fisk.
Third-graders and fourth-graders taught by Kristen Sebesta and Kelsey Scrupps, respectively, had earlier completed special projects in their classrooms and presented them to the audience during the assembly.
They shared what they had learned about service and sacrifice, thanking the veterans for their willingness to face adversity for their country. Their artwork and words were then presented to the veterans who were present.
Two members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, Frank Clark and John Hardt, demonstrated how to fold the American flag for ceremonial purposes.
The other veterans attending were Joe and Mikey Galloway, their daughter Raye Galloway Scrupps (a school employee who was not seated with the other veterans), Jack Scrupps and Gerald "Seth" Smith.
Two members of the Odessa Quilt Club, JoEllen Wollman and Lise Ott, presented the three members of the Galloway family with quilts made by club members and other volunteers in a tradition begun several years ago.
The quilts all include the patriotic colors of red, white and blue.
