Davenport girls dominate

DAVENPORT-The Gorilla girls basketball team won their fourth straight NE2B league game in convincing fashion last Thursday night, dominating winless and outmatched Upper Columbia Academy 57-18 Jan. 4.

Davenport pitched a 25-0 shutout in the first quarter as the Lions couldn't figure out the Gorilla zone press. Offensively, Clare Lathrop led the way with 10 points and four rebounds.

Seeing the clear path to victory, head coach Stacia Soliday rotated varsity and junior varsity players in and out of the game for the final three quarters, allowing nine players to play and eight to score.

"We were able to play nine people and we kind of well-rounded with our scoring and passing, so I thought that was good," Soliday said. "It was good practice for us to be able to run our offenses a little bit further."

Davenport had pushed its lead to 43-11 by halftime as Lathrop and Jensyn Jacobsen both scored 10 points. Another scoreless third quarter for UCA led to a 51-11 Davenport advantage, while the Gorillas relented offensively and used the convincing lead as an opportunity to practice running offensive sets for less experienced players.

"It was really nice to see everyone gain more confidence and grow, which is what we need as a young team," Jacobsen said.

Davenport's competition got significantly tougher Tuesday night, and the Gorillas fell to the Liberty Lancers 52-31 to snap a streak of six wins in seven tries.

The Gorillas are back on the road weekend, traveling to Asotin at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13.
