Sunshine proposes 19% rate hike

Inflation, increased wages cited

DAVENPORT — Sunshine Disposal, the company the city contracts with for garbage disposal services, is proposing a 19% increase for services provided to the city.

In a meeting with City Council Wednesday, March 13, regional manager Steve Wulf said inflation and the company being forced to raise wages five times are main contributing factors in the proposed increase. Additionally, he said, the state’s carbon tax has caused the company to spend considerably more on fuel.

City administrator Steve Goemmel said the 19% increase would apply to each can, dumpster and other equipment the city pays Sunshine for. Therefore, the rate would apply to each citizen who uses garbage services through the city.

Wulf also said Sunshine wants to get paid for services rendered and not “only get paid when the city gets paid,” which is how the contract is currently structured.

No decision was made by Council Wednesday. Mayor Jonathan Chapman said he wants to set committee meetings to discuss the proposal further.

In other disposal discourse Wednesday, Council approved the first reading of an ordinance amending a chapter of the Municipal Code that would require landlords to be notified before tenants can order dumpsters or make changes in their utility accounts.

Renters can currently order dumpsters. Their landlord is charged the bill if the renter doesn’t pay it.
