Hutterites dump spuds near Reardan

DEEP CREEK - When life gives you potatoes, you make anything you want.

The Spokane Hutterian Brethren between Reardan and Airway Heights dumped loads of russet potatoes after customers in the Columbia Basin cut contracts by 1,000 acres per seed farmer.

"Each acre cost us $2,500 to cultivate, so it's a significant loss when this happens," Hutterian Brethren Leonard Gross said.

The potato mountain was at the corner of West Sprague Road and Ritchie Road, off U.S. Highway 2, over the last weekend in May.

A social media post by Denise Bennett went viral, spreading word of the free potatoes.
