DAVENPORT - This season, with local trails unusually accessible and no major snakes or predators reported, hikers still have time for one of the area's most striking short climbs.

A .38-mile uphill trail, roughly the equivalent of 40 flights of stairs, leads to sweeping canyon views and basalt caves.
