Serving Lincoln County for more than a century!

Soliday's shooting touch, too much

Gorillas improve to 6-1 on season

DAVENPORT - Davenport's offense was unstoppable Friday, Dec. 19, as the Gorillas rolled to a 70-37 rout of St. George's.

Senior Glenna Soliday buried six 3-point shots and scored 26 points, leading the charge and posting the team's highest point total of the season. Davenport dominated St. George's from start to finish, using full-court pressure to generate 18 steals, while crisp ball movement created numerous open shots. In the first quarter, senior Clare Lathrop controlled the boards with four quick rebounds and added 11 points from inside the paint.

Davenport led 22-9 after eight minutes and extended its lead to 34-17 at the half.

In the second half, Glenna Soliday was the sharpshooter, scoring 15 points. At one point, she scored 11 straight.

After leading 56-25 in the third quarter, the Gorillas cruised to a 70-37 win.

Besides Glenna Soliday's game-high 26 points, she led the Gorillas with 12 rebounds and four steals. Lathrop scored 15 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and recorded four steals and a blocked shot. Addie Schneider, Taylor LeBret and Charlotte Soliday each scored eight points, and McCall Knopp and Mariah LeBret scored three and two points, respectively.

Sarah Harbaugh led the Dragons in scoring with 12 points.

"I thought we played really well," Lathrop said. "We wanted to come out of the locker room and shock them, and show them what Davenport is all about, and we did that. St. George's has some talented players, but we have really good shooters and executed well tonight."

Davenport coach Dusty Oestreich credited his defense for setting the tone of the game.

"Our defense gives most teams a pretty hard time," he said. "We are fast, athletic and in your face. Our girls are confident each time they walk into a gym, they feel like they are the better team."

He praised Glenna Soliday for her consistency and leadership.

"Glenna's game is always good. From beginning to end, I know what I'm going to get from her. She is going to outwork every player on the floor."

Though pleased with the win, Oestreich saw room for improvement.

"We need to be better in transition, both offensively and defensively. We've got to get back quicker on defense, and on offense, we've got to get out and run. Overall, I am pleased with the win."

The Gorillas improved to 6-1, and St. George's dropped to 1-6. Davenport's next home game is Jan. 10, against Northwest Christian.
