Gorillas 2nd at Okanogan, beat Liberty in dual

OKANOGAN — Pins and forfeits dominated as a high school wrestling team claimed a runner-up tournament finish and a league dual victory over a busy weekend in eastern Washington.

The Davenport/ Liberty Launch Academy Gorillas placed second at the Okanogan Bulldog Invite with 205.5 points on Saturday in Okanogan. Tonasket won the team title with 232 points, followed by Northwest Christian (Colbert) with 150, Eastmont with 113 and Okanogan with 112.5.

Davenport had strong individual showings, with several wrestlers earning top spots. Parker Bundy captured the 113-pound title with a 14-8 decision over Jonathan Ortega of Tonasket. Wayland Holmberg went 3-0 in the 138-pound bracket. Malachi Hoff pinned his way to first at 144 pounds. Gabe Carey finished with three wins at 157 pounds. Samson Kjar dominated at 165 pounds with three pins. Conner Horwath added two wins at 285 pounds, including a pin in the semifinals. Nova Petersen recorded one win at 175 pounds. Solomon Holmberg secured a victory at 190 pounds.

The Gorillas defeated the Liberty Lancers 48-28 in a Northeast 2B League dual meet Friday in Spangle.

Davenport secured eight wins, including pins by Parker Bundy at 120 pounds, Lincoln Hoff at 126, Wayland Holmberg at 138, Malachi Hoff at 150 and Samson Kjar at 165. The Gorillas also benefited from forfeits at 132, 157 and 285 pounds.

Liberty’s victories included pins at 106, 113 and 215 pounds, a major decision at 175 and a forfeit at 190.

Davenport wrestlers combined for 26 wins across the Okanogan tournament, contributing to the second-place finish. The Gorillas recorded 12 pins and three forfeits in the Liberty dual, building a decisive lead.
