Scammers attempt extortion

DAVENPORT — A local woman was targeted by scammers who impersonated Apple Pay, her credit union and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office in an attempt to extort money, according to sheriff’s office records.

Cheryl Diane Powers told Deputy Brandon Rose she received repeated calls in which the callers accused her of being linked to a drug lord in Mexico and opening child pornography accounts. They threatened to arrest her unless she paid them. Powers hung up without providing any information or money, the report states.
