Local lifeguard finds job rewarding

DAVENPORT - For many young people, a summer lifeguard job means time in the sun and a steady paycheck.

For Jesse Raugust, it has become something more meaningful.

Raugust, 21, of Davenport, is in his third season as a lifeguard. He said the role has given him a chance to stay connected to his community while helping keep kids safe.

"It's a good job. You get some sun, which is nice, but it's also a good opportunity to be around the community," Raugust said. "You see different faces every day. So, it's just fun to be around."

To become a lifeguard, Raugust had to complete a certification process that includes a 150-yard swim, two minutes of treading water without using hands, and retrieve a brick from the bottom of the pool, a depth of about 8 feet.

He also earned CPR certification and passed water rescue skills testing.

The certification must be renewed every two years.

One moment from last season stands out for Raugust. On the final day of the season, he made his first save when he pulled a blind girl from the shallow end.

"That was memorable," he said.

Raugust said what he enjoys most about the job is the kids. He finds it rewarding to watch them learn and improve their swimming skills over the summer.

"You can see they're learning," he said. "It feels like you're making an impact."

He also offered safety advice for families using the pool.

"If you're unsure about your kid being able to swim, a life jacket is the right answer - even if they can swim a little bit," Raugust said. "If you're unsure at all, a life jacket is always the answer."

Raugust said the experience has changed how he views water safety.

He believes lakes can be especially dangerous because there is often no lifeguard present. He stressed the importance of having someone watching at all times.

He recommended the job to other young people in Lincoln County, but only if they are serious about the responsibility.

"Yes, I would - but only if you want to be a lifeguard for the right reasons," Raugust said. "If you just want to be in the sun and have a chill job, it's probably not the right fit.

"If you want to be outside while also helping kids have fun during the summer and making sure they're safe, it's a good opportunity."
