  • Wild weather affects harvest

    Terrie Schmidt Crosby|Updated Jul 20, 2012

Wild and wooly weather has been keeping farmers and everyone else off balance this summer. Some summers, most of them actually, mean high temperatures of 90 degrees or more every day and absolutely no rain until September (okay, maybe one mid-summer thunderstorm). But the weather pattern has been very different this year, and many farmers are nervous. Rains in early June can mean an extra good wheat crop, with full kernels of good quality. But it can often also mean having to...

  • Visitors are Russian-born ethnic Germans

    Terrie Schmidt Crosby|Updated Jun 21, 2012

Odessa had foreign visitors last week, German citizens traveling through the U.S. and Canada, visiting relatives in Cincinnati and then venturing west. They were on their way to Vancouver (Washington or Canada? – we forgot to ask which) and ultimately Seattle, from which they would fly home to Germany. The two married couples had noticed the town of Odessa on their travel map, and since both gentlemen had been born in the vicinity of Odessa, Russia (now Ukraine), they were i...

  • RTS shut doors. Is it temporary?

    Terrie Schmidt Crosby|Updated Jun 21, 2012

The Rolling Thunder Saloon closed its doors last week, due to the pressures of a poor economy, said proprietors Nate Lathrop and Elisabeth Springer. The business has given up its liquor license, but it is nevertheless not for sale. The owners plan to keep the building, and, if things should improve economically over the next couple of years, there is a chance that the Saloon could re-open. Lathrop told The Record that he could no longer justify putting his own money into the...

  • Mud replaces dust at 2012 Desert 100

    Terrie Schmidt Crosby|Updated Apr 6, 2012

A week of rain showers was what one of the Stumpjumpers had asked for when he was in Odessa for the White Knuckle/Frostbite races the preceding weekend. He got his wish. There was no dust to be seen, so this race was different from every other Desert 100 that has been run on Wes and Faye King’s pasture a few miles outside of Odessa. Riders came across the finish platform with their bikes, and often themselves, covered in mud. The campsite was a muddy mess in places, and f...

  • Life-like and life-sized, this bird's a real and rare work of local art

    Terrie Schmidt Crosby|Updated Feb 25, 2012

Whether you love or hate the Canada goose, you would have to admit that the one pictured above looks like the real thing. In 1982, John M. Schmauder completed “The Wonder Deek,” as he titled it on the bottom of the platform bearing his carving, a decoy representating a very lifelike Canada goose. The goose is carved out of sugar pine, a wood particularly favored by woodworkers, according Mark Fulford, the current owner of the goose. Securely mounted on a wooden platform, it...
