Through an oversight or some kind of confusion at the WIAA, her information was not forwarded to Odessa-Harrington athletic director Darin Reppe until last Friday. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that the information cited on the Seattle Times website stated that Todd...

For the past 70 years, the Odessa Lions Club has been treating the community to its annual Turkey Carnival. This year, club members added a little extra atmosphere with the presence of two live turkeys, one male and one female, in a pen near the bingo announcer’s table. The turkeys belong to the Joe McNeil family, which raises poultry on its farm near Odessa. They were only there for show, however, and went back home after the carnival. More than 150 frozen turkeys were won l...
On a recent trip to Australia President Obama told a group of Aussie students that their counterparts in his country had "fallen behind" when it comes to math and science, saying he wants to reform the public school system. Obama also asserted that poor children don't get "support they need when they're very young" and are "already behind" when they enter grammar school. This from a person who uses a teleprompter to speak to grade school kids, who pays $30,000 per child to put his kids in private school. But for once he may...

The first automotive casualty of the season was a Subaru that failed to yield the right-of-way Monday morning at the corner of Highways 21 and 28. There were no injuries reported as a result of the accident, but the Subaru had to be towed away. Odessa Town Marshal Mike Wren, in a follow-up interview, had these tips for area drivers to remember when weather conditions turn adverse. 1) Slow down. Even though the posted limit on First Ave. is 30 miles per hour, Wren says that is...

Initially estimated at 4.0 magnitude, seismologists later upgraded the earthquake to 4.6. Callers to the KPQ radio station in Wenatchee are said to have felt the tremor in L...

Hi, here I am again. On the west side of Kagele road, on the west edge of the L-B-D in Lincoln Co. TS 21N, R31E, Section 36 is the Schibel farm. The attachment of the Schibel name to the farm started with Georg Peter before 1911, then Henry, Don and finally Jeff today (2010). One of Don’s sisters and her husband also farmed on the land for a period of time. Talking with Don Schibel and looking at the Schibel obituaries, I learned that in Russia about 1888, Georg Peter & K...

There were great plans 76 years ago in late November 1935, for the rabbit drive to be held in the Irby area, which was expected to draw hundreds of Spokane sportsmen. Rabbit drives had been held since Odessa’s earliest days. Rabbits were pests, and throughout the 20th Century they posed a problem because they ate crops and spread disease. The 1935 drive was set for December 8, west of Odessa, in an area bounded by Batum Road on the east, a point one mile west of Irby Road in the west and the North Central highway (now H...

Some of you may have seen the ad in last week’s paper for a community Thanksgiving dinner at Old Town Hall. That’s my cell phone number on the ad. When I lived in Portland, a little over three hours from my family in Bickleton, I frequently had to work the Friday and sometimes the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I love my family, but six and a half hours in a car in one day just isn’t my idea of anything to be thankful for. Then I discovered Thanksgiving dinner at my churc...

For the past decade, the cost to the town has remained flat at $2,500 per year, based on the number of of...
