Love - The Odessa Record "By Your Relative"

Series: Larry Fisher | Story 12

Hi, here I am again.

On the west side of Kagele road, on the west edge of the L-B-D in Lincoln Co. TS 21N, R31E, Section 36 is the Schibel farm. The attachment of the Schibel name to the farm started with Georg Peter before 1911, then Henry, Don and finally Jeff today (2010). One of Don’s sisters and her husband also farmed on the land for a period of time.

Talking with Don Schibel and looking at the Schibel obituaries, I learned that in Russia about 1888, Georg Peter & Katharina Elizabeth Amen Schibel married and soon after, left Russia came to the U.S. and settled near Walla Walla, Washington. During the next 18 +/- years, Georg & Katharina lived first in the Walla Walla area, then they moved to land west of Odessa, Washington and then finally back to Walla Walla for a very short period of time. (Note: At the time they were living west of Odessa, the land was where the Schafer tanks are located today. The land was state owned, mostly sand and very, very poor for farming.)

About 1906 they came back to Odessa for the second time and settled this time southwest of town where they lived for 12 years. Today it is called the Schibel farm. Georg Peter died 4-30-1924. Katherine died 4-02-1927.

In George’s obituary it mentioned “that he secured a home a few miles southwest of Odessa, where he resided until a few years ago when his son rented the land and he moved to town.” The son was Henry, born 25 April 1897, Walla Walla, Washington. Henry was Don’s father, Jeff’s grandfather.

(Note: Don Schibel believes that when his Schibel grandparents obtained the land in the L-B-D, there were buildings on the land constructed by the previous owner – 2 story house, a barn and other buildings for sure.)

In 1917-1918, improvements were made at the farm including a new house and a new barn which are the ones that remain today, 2010. About 1976. the house experienced a major remodel which included reworking the front of the house, adding a different type of entrance. The 1900/1915 domestic well was redrilled/replaced in 1992+/-.

(Note: Don told me that in 1936-1937, the original buildings dating back to before the 1906 time period were removed. He also pointed out to me, he was born 1929 in a bedroom in the 1917-1918 house.)

Until next time.

Your Relative,

Spokane
