Holiday cooking can get hectic without planning ahead. Now would be a good time to revisit Mise-en-place. No, this is not a town in the south of France, but a French phrase, meaning “put in place”. The practice of putting everything in place in the kitchen, clearing the workspace, assembling all ingredients and utensils before starting to cook will make time in the kitchen more enjoyable. Clear the counters Read through the recipe Assemble ingredients. Gather bowls, pots and t...
Christmas was a happy time for residents of the new town of Odessa during the last week of December 1906 The Odessa Record reported. The issue of December 26 gave this account of the holiday season: Though Christmas was a quiet day, it was a merry one, especially for the little folks of Odessa. Christmas gifts and Christmas cheer in the shape of confections, nuts and other dainties abounded in every home, and the spirit in which the little ones entered into the occasion could not but bring back memories that made all feel you...

After a delayed start to the season due to the football playoffs and a third-place finish for the football team, many of those same boys immediately started basketball practice. The first two games against larger 2B rivals did not go the Titans’ way, but since then, against 1B schools, O-H has found the winning touch. O-H 18 23 10 9 -60 Soap Lake 10 4 13 4 -31 Against S...

Now here’s a Christmas story for you. Just this past weekend, an elderly Odessa resident answered the phone to find a Canadian police sergeant on the other end of the line. He told her that her grandson had been picked up and was in jail. The story was that the grandson and two friends had been on their way to a funeral in Canada when they were stopped for a traffic violation. The caller went on to say that drugs were found in the car, although none of them apparently b...
Byron Behne watches the grain markets for the Odessa Union Warehouse. 12/14/11: Things got ugly pretty quickly last Wednesday as the crude oil and gold markets tanked and took the rest of the commodity sector with them. The euro tanked on further concerns over the state of the European economy, as Germany indicated it was unwilling to increase its commitment to the region’s bailout fund. The only grain news floating around at all is mild concern about a drying weather pattern in South America potentially affecting soy and c...

His wife, Kim King, told The Record that Mark had received an offer “out of the blue” from the doctor he had formerly worked with in Ruidoso. That doctor had been in the process of se...

Odessa Record subscriber Larry Fisher of Spokane continues his series of articles on the history of the Batum/Lauer area (where his wife, the former Joyce Kiesz, grew up.) Hi, here I am again. Continued from last week “The Schibels.” Don told me “his father changed over to the tractor around 1935 when farming started to improve.” By 1936, farming was better and in 1939 when WWII started, the crops were very good and the price was a lot better than it had been for quite a while. The “Great Depression” was over. In a 1935 TOR...

Based on the numbers, Christmas Fest 2011 was even more successful than last year’s event. A total of 275 people signed in at the door to be eligible for the 32 available door prizes (see box for winners’ names). Names of winners were drawn throughout the day. In 2010, 216 had signed in for a chance at one of 20 prizes. There may have been others who visited but did not bother to sign in, but the number was nevertheless a good indicator of the crowd size. Of the 32 door pri...

Generation Rx and Washington State University's School of Pharmacy have teamed up to do something about this growth epidemic. There will be a presentation about prescription...

The Odessa-Harrington Titans girls basketball team opened the season with games against the Davenport Gorillas and Lind/Ritzville-Sprague Broncos. Despite losing both games to the larger schools, there were a lot of positive signs that the team is on the right track. Against Davenport, the Titans were able to come out strong and played terrific defense in the first half, forcing numerous turnovers which led to fast-break opportunities, giving Odessa-Harrington a 30-20 half time lead. Against the Broncos, the girls started...
1 Years Ago From The Odessa Record December 15, 1911 Just now the small boy has something to think of besides play. His is busy enumerating his many wants for Christmas, and already the shadow of Santa Claus is looming up in the homes. December is a long month. The days are short and the nights long. But with the expectancy and planning for the great day to come, it soon passes, and almost before we know it, Christmas is here. May yours be a happy one. 75 Years Ago From The Odessa Record December 17, 1936 The city well has...
Byron Behne watches the grain markets for the Odessa Union Warehouse. 12/7/11: Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Grain prices backed up, as concern developed that Germany wasn’t on board with all aspects of the new European bailout plans. Japan’s in for western white. Egypt bought Russian and Argentine wheat earlier in the week. Friday the USDA drops another supply and demand report in our laps. The concern is they will further reduce projected demand numbers and correspondingly increase grain ending stocks. 12/8/...
