Sixty-six years ago, much as today, Odessa area hunters were anxiously awaiting the opening of the hunting season in October. Bag limits were different then. The local lakes were filled with water, something we are not enjoying at the present. The following was excerpted from the articles appearing in The Odessa Record for October 9 and 15, 1947. Duck hunters found generally good shooting on the opening day of the hunting season. The first day opened at noon, allowing 3 hours and 51 minutes of hunting. Many killed their...

Dillon Jahns and I sat down for his interview at the Odessa Golf Course clubhouse, his home away from home. In May of this year, he was recruited and hired to supervise the course and manage the groundskeepers for the new owners. It was a perfect match. Jahns has a passion for golf and a level of reliability that is way beyond his years. Although he is a salaried employee, it has not been unusual for him to rack up 190+ hour, two-week pay periods this summer without a complain...

A look back into the files of The Record shows that the campaign for the election of 1932, which would change the fate of America, didn’t cause much of a stir in Odessa. There wasn’t much talk of the campaign. For weeks in advance of the November 8 voting, The Record carried little or nothing about national, state or local issues. The spotlight, of course was on the presidential race, which was Franklin D. Roosevelt versus Herbert Hoover. In a straw vote at Odessa High School, Hoover came out the winner, 79 to 68. The Rec...

Deutschesfest is over for another year. By the time you are reading this column the trappings of the event will be stored away, the trash picked up and the streets cleaned. Many recipe requests came my way, for items from the bake sales. I am in the process of rounding up the recipes. One request was for Kaese Kuchen (Cottage Cheese Kuchen) That recipe I know by heart, so was able to jot that on napkins or whatever was handy, for out of town visitors. For those who subscribe...

Jamborees get the season off to a good start for all participating teams. At the O-H Jamboree, the...

By KATHY TAYLOR I was really looking forward to getting to know Duane and Jonnie Pitts better through this article. I was a little intimidated though, after all, Dr. Pitts is the oracle, the grand poobah of grammar, spelling and all things composition. After many years of service, teaching and devotion to this community, they recently retired and have moved to Moses Lake. Duane is still involved assisting with the transition for the new English teacher here. His heart still...

They decided to head home out of concern for their dogs. The...

Frank and Leo Guth were among Odessa’s first business operators. Just as the town was incorporated in 1902, several new businesses opened to make Odessa a full service center. Among them were the flour mill, built and operated by Portland Flouring Mills; the Odessa Mercantile and the Odessa Hardware & Implement Company, founded by the Guths. Some of Odessa’s pioneer wheat growers were major stockholders in the Guth’s firms, which sold shelf hardware, farm implements, wagons, buggies and later automobiles. Frank Guth sold his...
