Odessa subscriber Larry Fisher of Spokane continues his series of articles on the history of the Batum/Lauer area (where his wife, the former Joyce Kiesz, grew up). Hi, here I am again. When comparing L-B-D lifestyle for children of those early years vs today’s children, it is like comparing apples to oranges. Today most children have HDTVs, cell-phones, i-pods, computers, ATVs, ORVs, cars, pickups, motorbikes, motorcycles, automatic weapons, toys, many changes of clothes, a million choices of food types, AM-FM radios, p...

Deutschesfest is over for another year, and it seemed to be a good one, thanks to a lot of small town heroes. Our little four-day extravaganza does not just happen spontaneously, as everyone who has ever been involved already knows. I try to make sure to remember just how much work goes into making Fest happen, both on the scene and behind it. Because I (try to) play in the Oom Pas and Mas, I am frequently on the scene. I wear my dirndls and have a smile on my face, and am...
I learned a lot about Medicare in the last year. A knee replacement (that went south) and an infection I picked up at the hospital enabled me to extend my hospital stay. I was then taken to a recovery center for a total of 52 days before I was able to go home. I am thankful that my teacher’s retirement insurance covered basically everything that Medicare didn’t. Our country and its Medicare and Medicaid systems are broke and they can’t afford to keep paying such a large percentage of the medical costs! Medicare paid out $...

Festplatz, the center of Deutschesfest activities, boasts a vast array of German and American food selections. Many of the items offered for sale are made from recipes that have been used since the beginning of Deutschesfest, adapted from recipes used by Germans from Russia for over a century. A number of these recipes originated in everyday cooking in our ancestors kitchens and adapt well to current food tastes. Kraut Ranza predates today's pizza pockets by at least one hundred years. Golden brown yeast bread wraps the meat...

“The Bible is central to our faith,” said Pastor Jon Hayashi of Heritage Church but many people are intimidated by its scope and size. What does a person learn going through life lucky enough to have in-laws like Jim and Gerry Goetz? What does a person learn going through life with the best examples? I count it an honor to be their daughter-in-law, and I have been with them most of my life. I married their oldest son, Tom. Their other two sons, Terry and Greg, have always said they “can’t remember life without me in the family.” Jim and Gerry have taught me to love unconditionally, especially with our oldes...
Once towering cedars, fallen by stout lumberjacks. Then stripped of their bark, with a razor sharp axe. Cut seven feet long, they are roughly hand split, Then are promptly sent, to a tarry creosote pit. Along comes a farmer, needing to build a corral. Treated for days, they’re now ready to sell. Yet dripping and gooey, covered with a black muck, Lifted out of the pit, and loaded onto a truck. It’s a long rough ride, out there to the field. There’s no escaping---their fate has been sealed. A round hole is dug deep, in hard ear...

Odessa Record subscriber Larry Fisher of Spokane continues his series of articles on the history of the Batum/Lauer area (where his wife, the former Joyce Kiesz, grew up). Hi, here I am again. As I mentioned a few months ago, I first became aware of Odessa in the summer of 1955 because of the railroad. I didn’t know about the L-B-D until the winter of 1956-57. After attending the New Year’s Eve dance at the Odessa city hall where everyone was dancing to “swing” type music, we all left the dance and ended up somehow out at Leo...

Persistence pays dividends. Those hardy gardeners who did not become discouraged by late frost and wet ground, replanted as needed and faithfully tended their plots are reaping the benefits now. Cucumbers and zucchini are beginning to produce and tomatoes ripening. Another benefit of persistence is, I am finally tracking down some elusive, requested recipes. One of those recipes, Mrs. McGillicuddy’s Rice and Red Bean Salad, comes from Jackie Greeenwalt, and it is an ideal d...
