I’m always in a hurry, yes, I’m always flyin’ low. Makin’ ever’ minute count, when runnin’ to and fro. I follow a schematic, a mental blueprint in my mind. I insist there is an order, so I’m not runnin’ blind. Perfection is a must, though some don’t understand. No matter what the venture, everything must be well planned. I believe, yes, in self discipline, I live by a set of rules. I often whip and drive myself, unlike do many fools. I hate chaos and confusion, abhor things in disarray. I detest the slightest mayhem,...

Deutschesfest is always a bustling week in Odessa. Though local residents have been planning for a year and busily making preparations over the summer months, many things can’t be done until the last minute. Vegetable gardens burst at the seams with produce that needs attention and peaches, pears and apples tend to ripen at the same time. This weeks recipes will help take care of some of the bounty as well as providing interesting fare for your festival-going company. G...

His smile was so contagious, it matched his slim physique. He often wore a red beret, his body healthy and so sleek. A shirt was excess baggage, what a character, this Walt! An enthusiastic human, never quick to point out fault. He surely dwarfed Goliath, a giant of a man was he! His heart was made of pure gold, he was gentle as could be. He was a health food --- nut, he ate no fatty pork or veal, He loved his fruit and veggies, peanut butter, and oatmeal. Yet --- he really had a --- sweet tooth, but this you already know,...

From there they will travel to...

I quite often go to funerals, I go to several every year, And bid farewell to old friends, and never shed a tear. When at a cemetary, I’m always strong and brave, While others sob profusely, while standing o’er a grave. I can watch a sad ol’ movie, with no moisture in mine eye. Others sniff and wipe their nose, and dab their wet eyes dry. And at several weddings, I’ve seen eyes quite pink and red. I always end up so amazed, that tears of joy are shed. I’ve seen when there’s reunions emotions cloud the eyes. Some cry over sp...

    Korianne Scheller

September 11, 2001 was a day I will never forget, but am pained to remember. I lived and went to college in Purchase, NY at the time (20 minutes north of Manhattan). Shortly before 9 a.m. my dorm was alive with the commotion of doors being pounded on alerting everyone to the attack, TV's being turned on to full volume, and gasps/cries as fellow students had the sudden realization that family members and friends could be in imminent danger. In short, it was chaos. At that moment, I made a call to my parents here in Odessa (it...

  • Remember When? September 11, I Do!

Do you not remember the New York skyline, its twin towers glistening in the sun? Or does the word crater only make you think of the moon’s surface or that of a volcano; or do you remember in Septembers only the smoke from/of burning leaves, but how it leaves you in tears at the sight and sounds of an airplane overhead brings you back in dark memories of that fear of burning and falling buildings? * When you hear the sounds of the ambulance or a fire-truck that goes racing by doesn’t make you turn your head, and make you want...

If you are looking for zucchini you don’t have to search very far, just ask a few neighbors or friends and soon you will have plenty to try the recipes in this column. I have been overwhelmed with zucchini recipes. Though I have plenty of zucchini, I have not enough time to test drive all these recipes. Joyce McClanahan agreed to test out Cindi Bell’s recipe for Vegan Zucchini Bread. She reported tha...

  • Sound off, Odessa!

We know that driving while you are distracted can be fatal, but apparently texting while walking can lead to serious consequences as well. • Theater Review

    Terrie Schmidt Crosby

Last Friday, we took a much-needed day off and drove to Leavenworth to see “The Sound of Music” being performed this summer on one of that fair town’s three theater venues. Prompting us to go see this particular production was the fact that it was the final performance for one of the two groups of child actors involved that included Kameron and Jared Goetz, the sons of Kevin and Jennifer Goetz of Coulee City. Their great-grandfather is Al Goetz of Odessa, currently a resid...
