OLYMPIA, Wash. — While Democrats in the state legislature have supported enacting a capital gains tax to fund public education in the past, they aren’t itching to pass one this legislative session now that they control both the statehouse and the governorship. At a Thursday morning news conference, Senate Majority Leader Sharon Nelson, D–Maury Island, said that while “everything will be on the table” she doesn’t see much momentum behind passing a capital gains tax assessed on profits derived from the sale of property or...
A bill to be introduced this session would eliminate the death penalty in Washington State and require people convicted of first degree murder to serve life sentences without the possibility of parole. Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson requested Senate bill 6052 after Senate bills proposing the same legislation did not pass through a committee hearing last year. “I’m reasonably optimistic that this could be the year,” Ferguson said mentioning the bill’s bipartisan sponsorship. “The votes are there.” Despite oth...

Sessions’ announcement came via a memo to U.S. attorneys, in which he referenced the illegality of possessing and distributing marijuana under the Controlled Substances Act. Although the rest of my family met her Wednesday night, I first met LuLu (although she was nameless at that time) the morning of Thursday, December 28, when I went to our laundry area to make sure she was still alive. When I opened the door, I was greeted with the sickening sweet smell of infection and a wagging tail that was attached to a sightless pup so emaciated I was instantly brought to tears. My first thought was, "How could anyone be so cold-hearted and cruel to a...
Spokane Ag Expo challenges your kids to be creative over the Holiday school break. The only criteria is the theme of their exhibit must be farm, ranch or ag-related. The three age categories are: 7 years old and under, 8 years old through 12 years old and 1...
It’s called “NIMBY-ism” and it can kill if left to fester. Short for “not in my backyard,” this community-reinforced roadblock often prevents drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities from opening, and that means those in the throes of addiction must look elsewhere for help or die in droves. In October 2017, Florida native Brittany Ringersen – who’ll mark nine years as an individual in recovery this spring – celebrated the fourth anniversary of the opening of her Boynton Beach, Florida-based rehab center. What makes this...

The Miss Odessa scholarships associated with the community float will remain in place. Chamber president Zach Schafer said board members very much hoped that some other civic g...

Our report on the most recent Odessa Town Council meeting said incorrectly that Bill Knerr had been appointed to the council. He has been appointed to the planning commission, not the council. The open council position being vacated by Terry Goetz will be filled by Vickie Iverson, who was elected by Odessa voters in November. There will be another vacancy, as we stated last week, when Bill Crossley resigns his council seat to begin serving as mayor in January. Citizens willing to serve on the council are asked to submit...
