    Updated Oct 3, 2014

This past Saturday, the Big Red Barn Farmers Market in Davenport hosted a Farm-to-Table event. Local chefs, Adam Hegsted and Aaron Fish prepared a five-course meal in which all the food was provided by market vendors and travelled no more than 45 miles to the table. The event was hosted in the historic Big Red Barn two miles east of Davenport. The barn is listed on the National Historic Barn Registry and was restored by Davenport native, Crayton Guhlke. To say the dinner was...

  • Excellence in agriculture to be recognized at Ag Expo

    Updated Oct 3, 2014

Everyone involved in our agricultural industry has benefitted from individuals and groups who have made extraordinary contributions to the industry. It can be as far reaching as Dr. Norman Borlaug who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his work in wheat genetics. That research is credited with helping to feed a hungry world and starting the “Green Revolution.” Or it can be local with researchers who made discoveries in the use of Variable Rate Technology for fertilizer applications or one of our local producers who...

  • Deutchesfest it is- Chamber opts for one word- 44th Fest is a success

    Updated Sep 24, 2014

By majority vote of the members present at Tuesday's meeting of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce, the group opted to continue to use the term Deutschesfest as a single word, deciding that another change in spelling would be counter productive to the name recognition achieved over the past 20 years of using the single-term noun. The 44th Fest has come and gone, by most accounts another successful event for Odessa and its businesses, churches and other non-profit organizations....

    ROB COFFMAN|Updated Sep 24, 2014

Can we ride ATVs on county roads in Lincoln County? This seems to be one of the most common questions lately, but the answer is, it depends. In 2013, the Washington State Legislature passed HB 1632 that allows ATV use on county roads that are posted 35 miles per hour or less. Of course, the ATVs must be licensed and meet certain regulations in order to be legally driven on these roads. It has taken some time for the Department of Licensing to develop the required license...

  • Odessa welcomes you to 44th Fest!

    TERRIE SCHMIDT CROSBY|Updated Sep 17, 2014

Welcome to the 44th annual Odessa Deutsches Fest celebration! Odessa has been gearing up, preparing, cleaning and getting the word out for most of the summer, but the conversation about what to do for Fest really takes place all year. We have had several enquiries over The Record's use of "Deutshes Fest" as opposed to "Deutschesfest." A little history is in order. The Fest began in 1971, and up through 1990, it was spelled as two words in every issue of The Record. In the May...

  • Common Core generating plenty of comment

    Updated Sep 10, 2014

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan obviously knew what he was doing when he timed the USDOE revocation of Oklahoma’s NCLB Waiver on the proverbial “take out the trash day,” just before the long Labor Day weekend. One Duncan soundbite is that Common Core is not a top down corporate and/or federal mandate, but he doesn’t want to call national attention to his own repudiation of that claim. It is now impossible for anyone to believe Duncan’s spin after he punished Oklahoma for repealing its standards and tests. Neither c...
