The 17th Annual Sandhill Crane Festival will take place March 28, 29, 30, 2014, in Othello. The festival will include over 30 lectures on everything from birding to wolves. Tours entitled Sandhill Crane, Burrowing Owl, Ground Squirrel, Palouse Falls and several others are offered starting Friday and run through Sunday. The Harrington Historic Preservation Commission met this week and voted for the board members, with the new three-year terms being filled by Aileen Sweet, Anita Harman and Karen Allen. Twenty five animal heads and furs have been on display in the Harrington Public Library since June of 1973. The late Louis Schultz was a Harrington farmer who enjoyed game hunting when he was not busy with keeping his farming operations going. Schultz began game hunting in 1946 and made two trips to Africa, trips into British Columbia, the Yukon and Alaska. Due to postal rate increases that make our out-of-pocket costs keep going up for mailing out copies of The Odessa Record, we will have to increase our subscription rates. The new rates will take effect on April 1, 2014. Renewal notices sent out in March for April 1 renewal will reflect the new rates. The special election held February 11 saw the passage of levies for school and hospital districts, most by substantial margins. Harrington School Harrington School District #204 ran Proposition No. 1, a replacement maintenance and operation levy, in the amount of $535,000. Lauren Crosby, part-time staffer at The Odessa Record, submitted a photo she took for the newspaper in the Ag Expo Photography Contest this year, receiving 'honorable mention' for her efforts. Monday evening the Harrington Opera House Society met in the Art Room with their new president, Mark Stedman, leading the agenda. Edwall resident and architect Sue Lani Madsen presented her plans for installation of an elevator, followed by discussion of those plans. Area law enforcement officials have been busy investigating and apprehending suspects in stolen property cases in three counties.
